The “The Howard-Smith Collection” is so named after Lida McKinney Howard-Smith, and Elise Pendleton Howard-Smith, Lida's daughter. These august ladies preserved the letters over the last 123 years.

The transcriptions are owned and © copyrighted by Mrs. F. A. Augsbury, Jr. of Ogdensburg, NY, 1998. The originals are at the McClung Library in Knoxville Tennessee.

These letters were loving transcribed by Diana Horning, for Mrs. F. A. Augsbury, Jr.

The TNGenWeb volunteers, with the cooperation of the McClung Historical Collection, are pleased to offer the historic Howard-Smith Collection of early East Tennessee family correspondence as part of our Letters from Forgotten Ancestors Project.
