"In this world nothing can be said to be certain,
except death and taxes."  --Benjamin Franklin

Tax records are important to genealogists. There are several tyypes of taxes: poll taxes, a tax on all free white males in a community, and property taxes. Taxes on property include both real and personal taxes. Tax records are important, particularly in the absence of census records, because they verify that a person was in a particular place at a particular time. Once a person appears on the tax records, he should appear on the records year after year until he dies or until he moves.

The first tax records for Loudon County were taken in 1870. The next available records were recorded in 1873 and are available for the rest of the years.

The Tennessee State Library and Archives has online a list of all available tax records for all Tennessee Counties.
