John Emison and Margaret Boals Family

I have chosen to use the Emison spelling in this genealogy report since it is the one in my database. The name has been equally spelled Emerson and Emmerson in the early records of Madison, Haywood and Crockett. The original spelling has not been verified by any researcher, so the choice of the individual families, census takers and record keepers prevailed in most instances.

The origin of the Emison lineage, prior to those immigrants to America, has not been found. An earlier researcher advanced the theory that they were descended from Emer, the first Milesian King of Ireland, who shared the throne jointly with his brother Eremon. After considerable research this cannot be found in any of the Irish records I have collected in my library. A thorough search of my Scottish records have not revealed Emison/Emersons in the clans of that country. This leaves another theory that the Emersons were of Saxon origin and were in England prior to the invasion of William the Conqueror. James I, of England, promoted a massive transportation of English and Scottish people to Ireland in order to dispossess the native Irish Clans of their heritage. Oliver Cromwell, in his destructive march throughout the island, brought in many of his followers, to complete the job of leaving, for the most part, the native Irish landless. It is possible that the Emison and McKnight families found themselves in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland as a result of one of those plantations.

The immigrant ancestor of all the Emisons in Madison, Haywood and Crockett, Tennessee, John Emison, arrived with the family of his aunt, Rebecca (Batty) McKnight on the British Brig, “Alexis” out of Greenock, Scotland. A list of passengers intending to go by British Brig, Alexis, of Greenock to Wilmington, North Carolina included 17 passengers, sworn 29 Mar 1804. Departure date has not been found, but it was probably shortly after the passengers had all signed on. Listed were the family members of Hu McKnight, age 48, farmer, from Belfast, Ireland. Other family members were: James McKnight, age 54 (14), farmer, out of Belfast, Ireland; Batty McKnight, age 36, farmer, out of Belfast, Ireland; Margaret McKnight, age unknown, out of Belfast, Ireland; John McKnight, child, out of Belfast, Ireland; Batty McKnight, Jr, child, out of Belfast, Ireland; and Elizabeth McKnight, child, out of Belfast, Ireland. (Handbook on Irish Genealogy”, by Donal F. Begley, transcribed and submitted to the Internet by Alison Davis). The age of James McKnight later proves to be a son, age 14, and the listing of John Emison as John McKnight cannot be explained, but one can only conjecture that it was for passage purpose.

Greenock, Scotland is on the Firth of Clyde in Strathclyde located near Port Glasgow. In 1804, Greenock was a big shipbuilding center, and an important embarkation point for emigrants leaving Scotland for North America and Australia The convenience of Greenock for those Ulster immigrants was the fact that they had only to cross a short stretch of the Irish Sea to enter the Firth of Clyde that would take them up to it’s port at Greenock. The Alexis, and other ships sailing from Greenock, would probably have taken a northern route around Ireland until they reached the open sea..

The Alexis would have arrived in America at the mouth of the Cape Fear and traveled the 16 miles up the river to reach Wilmington, the destination of the first leg of the McKnight families’ migration to Moore County, North Carolina. The river had many stories to tell prior to the arrival of the Belfast immigrants, and it is possible that the McKnights had heard the tales of Edward Teach, “Blackbeard”, the pirate, who would sail down from his home at Bath to raid and put fear in the hearts of the settlers. The pirate, Stede Bonet, had been captured on the Cape Fear River, ridding the river of another dangerous individual. The river was navigable by large vessels for about 40 miles above Wilmington. From that point, long boats, lighters and large canoes would take travelers for 100 miles more. However the river, itself, was a dangerous place to travel, with it’s fluctuation of water levels, causing logs and sandbars to upset many of it’s travelers. Alligators were plentiful in it’s waters, and if those dangers were overcome, there was always the thieves who plied the waterways looking for some unsuspecting traveler to rob. By the time the McKnights arrived, there could be seen many plantations built along the river and the town of Fayetteville, about 27 miles up the river from Wilmington was heavily involved in the receiving of goods from inland, and shipping down the river for transport overseas. The Revolutionary War had disrupted the busy activities that had begun to take place before the war, but business was beginning to recover and the river was a busy place.

The Cape Fear River had it’s beginning two hundred miles up it’s course in the piedmont area, where the Haw and the Deep River came together in Chatham County. The McKnight’s destination could be reached by traveling up the river and branching off into the Deep River, which carried them to Moore County located on the river. This stretch would have used for it’s mode of transportation a flatboat, raft, or perriauger, which had been build to navigate the inland rivers. Moore County, was by that time, a settled county, with the majority of it’s population Scottish. It was recovering from the Revolutionary War where several skirmishes and battles had been fought on it’s soil. Land grants were being issued to those soldiers who had fought in the war, and many of the grants were for land in the newly emerging lands that had been Indian territory prior to 1821 in the western part of Tennessee.

Hugh McKnight is listed in the 1810 and 1820 Censuses of Moore County. In the same vicinity were: Robert Boles, father of Margaret (Peggy) Boals; Andrew Cole, father of Susannah Cole, who was the mother of Margaret (Peggy) Boals; and Archibald Boyd, who married one of the Emison’s daughters. Other familiar families who themselves, or their children, were later found in Madison, Haywood and Crockett Counties were: Asa, John, Abraham, Isaac, John Sr., John, Jr., and Jesse Sowell, Thomas, Henry and George Cox; John and Archibald Medlin; Jacksons; Pearce; Perrys; Malcolm, Nevan, and Alexander Clark; Archibald, Alexander, and John Ray; James Freeman; William Coffer; Silva, John, John B., Joseph, Richard, Thomas, Jr., Thomas, William, Benjamin, Elvina, George H., and James Cole; Peter and Murdock Ferguson; Charles Stewart; Flora, Daniel, and Donald McFarland; Archibald and Christian McMillan; John, Archibald and Donald Patterson; Henry Morris, John Baker, Tobias Fry, Warren Jones; John Cates; William Arnold; and Henry Bailey and many others.

John Emison married Margaret Boals, 1820, in Moore County. .Margaret Boals was the daughter of Robert Boals, Jr. who had married Susanne Cole, c1795, in Moore County, North Carolina. Susanne was the daughter of Andrew and Rebecca Cole. The arrival dates for the Boals and Cole families has not been established, but they were in Moore County prior to the arrival of the McKnights. Many of the Cole families of North Carolina are noted for their pottery which has been a family tradition for many generations. It has not been established whether the Coles of Moore County, were involved in the industry.

The first two children of John and Margaret Emison were born in Moore County, and before the birth of their third child, in 1825, the family had migrated to West Tennessee and settled in the Cotton Grove Community, in Madison County.

The route the Moore County families took to reach their West Tennessee destination could have been across North Carolina to connect with the Valley Pike Road that would have taken them to Long Island (now Kingsport) on the Holston River. Basically, their route would have then followed the route that Interstate Highway 40 now travels. The migration from North Carolina tended to take this route. South Carolinians wishing to move west took a route through Georgia and northern Alabama. The exact arrival date has not been determined definitely, but the later censuses record that the third child, Rebecca, born in 1825, was born in Tennessee. This indicates that she was born in Madison County or on the trail after coming into Tennessee. They are said to have settled in another area of Madison county before moving to their final location.

In 1832, the couple moved to the area located in Madison County, that later became a part of Crockett County when it was formed in 1871. On June 4, 1838, the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee passed an Act establishing the public school system in the state. On June 4th 1838, a record was make of the elected school commissioners in each district of Madison County, Tennessee, and a listing of the parents with number of children attending the schools. In District #1 the following parents, of interest, were listed: Thomas McKnight, 1; Hugh McKnight, 5; and William McKnight, 2. District # 9 had: Kitchen Hathaway, 1; John Carter, 2; James Bowls, 2; John Emerson, 4; Micajah Midgett, 3; Joshua Cozart, 2; and Gray Medling, 4.

After the move to the new area, John Emison went into debt for a large tract of land and died before the debt could be retired. James Emison, the oldest son, went into the stave business, with his mother, and was able to pay the remaining money due on the mortgage. Some of the original tract of land is still in the possession of some of their descendants.

Cypress Methodist Episcopal Church, South was organized in 1831. John and Margaret Emison, their oldest daughter, Susan Laman, son-in-law, Daniel Laman; and five sons, William, John, James, Robert and Benjamin Emison, were charter members of the church. They are all buried in the cemetery at Cypress. The church was placed on the Cageville Circuit in the Madison and Haywood Conference. The first building was a log house 20′ by 30′. It remained the main building until 1871, when a plain frame building 35′ by 56′ replaced it. Trustees at the time of the property deed was executed in 1871 were: A. C. McMillan, James Emmison, J. C. Bowls, W. M. Emmison, and Dan’l Layman. By 1871, the church had been placed in the Memphis Conference.

Following is a four generation chart of the descendants of John and Margaret (Peggy) Boals Emerson. The notes added are those I have written into the records. My original notes would have made the report so cumbersome that it would have been very difficult to follow the general outline of the descent. In addition, it would have taken up approximately 75 to 100 pages. By digesting the notes, I have been able to bring it down to a manageable size. Anyone wishing the complete descent, with notes, can contact me and I will be glad to share a Gedcom file with you. An effort has been made to include the female lines of the children of John and Margaret Emison in this report. It is indexed to facilitate easier researching.
