55th (Brown's) Tennessee Infantry Regiment History
Also called 56th Tennessee Infantry Regiment

This regiment was organized at Columbus, KY on 14 February 1862; All of the companies except I and K were surrendered at Island Number 10 in the Mississippi River on 8 April 1862. Company reports state that I and K were on detached service at the time, and were not surrendered with the rest of the regiment. The regiment was reorganized 26 September 1862; field consolidation with the 46th Tennessee Infantry in January of 1863; merged into 4th Consolidated Tennessee Infantry in April of 1865; paroled at Greensboro, N.C. on 1 May 1865.

55th TN Infantry, Company B

Captain Pritcher M. Melton, Company B. Men from Benton County, TN. Organized at Trenton on 9 October 1861. This company was raised with 88 men from Benton County, TN. They were ordered to Columbus, KY with the rest of the regiment. They were in most of the battles that the Army of Tennessee fought and was present at the surrender of General Johnston's Army in N.C. and paroled at Greensboro, N. C. on 1 May 1865. Captain P.M.
