Alexander McCall & Mary Ann Elizabeth "MAE" Armstrong McCall
Alexander McCall was born August 1, 1765, probably in Ireland. He resided in Surry
and Stokes Counties in NC from approximately 1785 until 1800.

Mary Ann Elizabeth "MAE" Armstrong McCall was born April 19, 1775 in
North Carolina (probably Surry or Stokes County). She was the daughter of Martin
and Mary Tate Armstrong. MAE married Alexander McCall about 1795.

In 1800, he with his wife, children and mother-in-law moved to Davidson County. Records say
that the family stayed there until the house in Smith County was completed. The only proof,
other than family lore, of Alexander's birthplace is found in the 1880 census where John lists
his father as born in Ireland. In several documents of the late 1700's, Alex is listed as a lawyer
for Martin Armstrong, his father-in-law. This family settled on Flat Rock Road in Smith County
about 1800 in a two-story red cedar log house that stood until 1981 when it burned to the ground.

His children were: Dr. Alexander, Dr. John, Ann McCall (died at 28 unmarried), Dr. Martin,
Thomas B., Mary (married Bowen), Dr. David, Dr. Joseph, and Robert. Thomas B. is listed as
dying in Florida, Robert is believed to have died in Nevada, and Martin died in Alabama. The
other sons stayed in Tennessee and produced many children. Alexander died April 4, 1833,
and is buried on the property on Flat Rock Road as are Ann McCall, Dr. Joseph and his wife,
Sarah "Sally" Brooks McCall. There are several other fieldstone markers. These may mark the
graves of Alexander's wife, Mary Ann Elizabeth Armstrong McCall (no marker)died January 5,
1865, Dr. John McCall, Martin Armstrong, and his wife, Mary Tate Armstrong.

The original portraits are in very bad condition, and these have been enhanced on the computer.
The caretaker of these portraits is presently searching for a person capable of restoring both.
