Hubert Otis Kemp
Hubert Otis Kemp was a boy in this picture, but he became a man of high
standing in his community and county, becoming the first Chief of the Metro
Nashville Police Dept. from 1963 to 1972.

Hubert Otis Kemp was born November 08, 1908, married Mary Petty in 1929 in Sumner Co.,
and died November 09, 1992. He and Mary had three children. Mary's family history can
be found in "Pettys In America & Some Kith & Kin" by Irene Petty Watt.

Hubert's line is as follows: He was the son of John "Hailey" Kemp (1868- 1935)
and Maggie Leota Kennedy (1881-1966). John Hailey Kemp was the son of Wade M.
Kemp and Margaret Octavia Thomas. Maggie Leota Kennedy was the daughter of
Taut Kennedy (1856-1914)and Martha Russell (1859- 1893). Pictures of Taut and

Hailey, as he was called, married Maggie Kennedy Dec. 23, 1900 in Smith County, Tennessee.
Wade M. Kemp was the son of Jenks and Lucretia Hickerson Kemp. His grandfather was Murphy
Kemp b. 1770. Jenks was b. Jan.27,1792. Wade was born about 1831 in Smith Co., Tennessee
and died 1878. Wade's brother, Sampson Dixon Kemp, enlisted in Missouri as a Confederate
soldier, dying on the breastworks at the Battle of Franklin November 30, 1864.

Wade M. Kemp married (1.) Minerva Celia Brockett Oct. 09, 1856, daughter of Elisha Brockett
and Celia Young. She was born March 03, 1836 in Tennessee and died March 03, 1859 in
Tennessee. He married (2.) Margaret Octavia Thomas, November 19, 1863 in Smith Co.,
Tennessee, daughter of William Thomas b. 1788 in Virginia, and Nancy Young b. 1790 in
South Carolina. Minerva Celia Brockett was the sister to Cyrus Jackson Brockett who
married Betsy Williams, daughter of James C. and Millicent Sutton Williams. Wade and
Minerva had a daughter Cornelia Victoria Kemp b. Sept. 06, 1857. Wade and Margaret
had Nancy H. Kemp, John Hailey Kemp, D.L. Kemp, and Otis Edgar (Ed) Kemp.
