This history on the Williams Family was graciously submitted by Robbie Nesbitt Frye & Judith Kemp Holley, the great-great-granddaughters of Mary Ann (Polly) Williams, (Mrs. Asa Kemp).

I have added additional information that is not present in the original document, such as numbers to the generations, corrected spelling of some first names and surnames. "What Is In A Name?" by Hoke Holland West Gallatin, Tennessee  1970 & "JOHN PANKEY of Manakin Town, Virginia, and His Descendants" Volume Two, by George Edward Pankey, Ruston, Louisiana  1972, are two books that were used as reference in matching up these families where they were the most difficult to follow. JAMES CLARDY WILLIAMS came to Defeated Creek from North Carolina. Originally from Scotland with his father, mother, brothers and sisters when a boy. ( Do not know his father and mothers name except his mother was a CLARDY) They are buried at their grandson’s home, IRA WEST, near the Williams Cemetery, near Difficult, Tennessee.

[From my own research and contacts James parents were Tobias Williams and Jemima Clardy]

James Clardy Williams was the youngest of eleven children. They were ANDERSON, TOM, GID, LEM, BILL, BETSY, NANCY, SOOKY, PRISSY, a son (name unknown) and JAMES.

ANDERSON went to the Mexican War in 1812 and never returned.

[The above statement is somewhat incorrect. The War of 1812 was with the British. The Mexican War took place 1846-1848. Tobias Williams son Anderson Williams was not living during the Mexican war, he died during his service in the War of 1812.

Anderson Williams (Son of Tobias) was born ca 1783 and died Jan. 13, 1815. He served from 1814-1815 in the 2nd Regular Mounted Gunner Volunteers under Colonel Thomas Williamson. His estate was administered in Smith Co. TN, by Susannah Williams (probably his wife) between about 1815-1817.] [Reference material on Anderson Williams provided to me by Peggy Martin Blue]

Do not know who any of the boys married except James, Prissy married a *SNEED, Nancy a *RUSSELL, Sooky a *McCLELLAN, Betsy a *PARKER.

James Clardy Williams was born January 31, 1798 and was married to MILLIE SUTTON in 1818. She was born April 23, 1802. There were 12 children born to their union.

ANDERSON, BETSY, POLLY, FANNIE, LEIGHTON, HENDERSON, JAMES, HAYWOOD, MARTHA, EVELINE, BAILY, and NEWTON. All lived to have a family but one who died when a boy.

1. Anderson the oldest had eight children. Seven lived to be fifty years of age. Anderson was born January 30, 1819 and died September 1, 1880. He married POLLY ANN WEST in November 1842. She was born January 25, 1826 and died March 27, 1909. Eight children were born. They were ALETHA, ARETHA, PAUL, (an infant son died), ALICE, DIXON, RUTHA BELLE, and HARVEY.

[1.] Aletha [Williams] married LARKIN RUSSELL. She was born January 11, 1847 and died February 18, 1897. Family unknown.

[2.] Aretha [Williams] married WILLIAM RUSSELL. She was born June 6, 1850 and died December 22, 1932. To this union was born six children. LARKIE, LILLIE, ERNEST, EMMA and two little girls died while small.

[1.] Larkie [Russell] married NORA HODGES and seven children were born to them. They were ANRO*, HERBERT, ETHEL, SADIE LEE, HERALD, HARRY, ALICE* and EMMA*. [*Should be Alice Emma 1child not two]

[4.] Sadie Lee [Russell] married DONALD UNRICH to them two children born, RUSSELL, and MARCIA ANN.

[5.] Herald [Russell] married O. Z. KEMP, one daught (sic) was born, CHARLINE. O.Z. died. Herald then married. [end of sentence, no name given].

[6.] Harry [Russell] married JEWEL BOZE, one daughter born BARBARA JEAN.

[3.] Ernest [Russell] married TALITHA KEMP. One son was born to this union. DONALD LEE who married RUTH BROOKS. Two children were born [to Donald & Ruth Brooks Russell] - PAUL and TALITHA PEARL.

[3.] PAUL [Williams] married LU VISA KEMP and BERTHA MCCLELLAN. He was born November 23, 1854 and died December 22, 1933. Family Unknown.

[5.] Alice [Williams] married MENTER A. SIMMONS. She was born March 5, 1858 and died September 23, 1936.

[6.] Dixon [Williams] married LEONA CARVER and MINNIE FERGERSON WHITSON. He was born January 10, 1860 and died May 9, 1913. Family Unknown.

[7.] Rutha Belle [Williams] married ROBERT HAILEY. She was borned* [sic] Aug. 6, 1863. To this union was borned* [sic] two children. ZETTIE and BOBBY. Zettie [Hailey] married WILL EPLY to them were born four children, MAXINE, ROBERT, YANCY AND VIRGINIA. Families unknown.

Bobby [Hailey] married HARRY HATCHER. This union was born three children SARA, RUTH,* [*Sara Ruth one child not two] RAY and THELMA. There [sic] families unknown.

[8.] Harvrey* (sic) [Williams] married EMMA GREEN. He was born July 26, 1866 and died April 25, 1924. To them was born one son HUGH. He married VERA SIREY* [sic] *[ Sircy]. To this union was born two children, HUGH JR. and HARVEY RAY. Vera died and Hugh [re] married. But name unknown.

Five children were born to this union: They were JOSE* [Virginia Josephine Witt], MARTHA [Witt], CYAS* [sic] [Cyrus J. Witt], RICE* [*Darius A. Witt] and EMILY* [Sarah Emily Witt].

[2.] Ina [Duke] married EDGAR HACKETT, to them one child was born, BOBBY LEE. He married GERALDINE HACKETT. Their family unknown.

[3.] Pearl [Duke] married CAVIT CARDWELL. To this union two children were born JOHN and JAMES.

[4.] Mittie [Duke] married CARL KIRBY. To them a child was born, HILDA J. [or JO?]

[5.] Carsie [Duke] married WILLARD MALONE.

[6.] Minnie Kemp*[Surname is Duke, Kemp may be Minnie’s middle name?] married WALTER MALONE. (Their family unknown)

Six children were born to them, ASA JR., J. B., KATHLEEN, a baby died when an infant, RUTH and DEWEY. Asa [Elster Kemp] Jr. married LOIS GRIGG. J. B. [John B. Kemp] married GLADYS ANDERSON and one son was born to them ROBERT KEY [Kemp]. [J. B. and Gladys also had a son John Morgan Kemp, b. 1952, named for his grandfather]

(12.) Newton [Williams] died young. The first to be buried in the Williams Cemetery at Difficult, Tennessee, inside of the rock wall. James Clardy Williams had the stone wall built that is now in the center of the cemetery. Those buried inside of the wall are, Newton Williams, Betsy Witt, Henderson Williams, Millie Sutton Williams, and James Clardy Williams. An infant son of Anderson Williams is buried in the stone vault near the stone wall. There are seven of James Clardy Williams’ children buried in the cemetery, Anderson, Leighton, James, Henderson and Newton Williams, Betsy Witt and Eveline Thomas.

All of James Clardy Williams sons joined the Rebel Army and fought through the war. (1861-1865) All returned with only James* [James Henry] wounded. A bullet hit a coat button and was driven in his body. A silk handkerchief was drawn through his body to remove the button.

John Williams now has the button. He lived to an old man. James Clardy Williams (the father) at that time lived on the hill near the cemetery now owned by Edgar Sutton. He owned several slaves. He did not join the Army and the Yankees came to kill him because he kept his slaves. When he heard them at the door he went upstairs and crawled out of a little window on the roof over the front porch and stayed there all night. He could see them but they could not see him, as it was dark where he had crawled under the eave of the house.

As he went out of the window it fell and made a noise. They thought it was a quilt box top and made a Negro open all of the boxes. The Negro was scared almost to death as he thought they would find his master in one of the boxes. They stayed until almost day and left. If they had stayed until daylight they could have seen him. The house has been rebuilt but the window was left in it.

His wife died a few years later and he married ADALINE WEST. (Not related to the Defeated Creek Wests). His children objected to his marriage but they lived together until his death. They had one child named EDNA [Williams], who was six weeks old at the time of his death. Edna [Williams] married a McGLOTHIN, now living in Missouri.

Eveline Williams Thomas was born, married, died and layed* [sic] out in the same room at the age of 79 years.

Haywood Williams died in Evansville, Indiana. Bailey Williams died in Cookeville, Tennessee while on a visit with his daughter Lula Algood. His remains were carried back to his home in Louisville, Kentucky.
