ROBERT SHARP FAMILY

Submitted By: Jean Sharp

Robert Sharp was killed by Indians 3 Oct. 1792 (Knox Co, now Blount Co, Tn. (History of Blount Co)
It is believed by most researchers of the Sharp family, that he was born ca 1750's in Virginia. He owned land in Rockbridge Co, Va.

On 15 March 1791, Robert Sharp late of Rockbridge County, Va. did sell unto Thomas McClean for 150 lbs a tract of land. Robert Sharp soon afterwards removed with his family to Tennessee where he departed life interstate, leaving his widow, the sd Lettitia, who afterwards married said John Clarke and following children: John, Alexander, Nancy, Edward, James B., Mary, and Robert. Robert since left Tennessee a single man and has not been heard of in 7 years.

Same land conveyed by Wm. Ferguson and wife to Robert Sharp 14 Dec. 1787.
Signed: Alexander Sharp, Susannah Sharp, James Clark, Nancy Clark, Andrew Thompson, Mary Thompson, Edward Sharp, James B. Sharp, John Clark (x his mark), Letitia Clark, John Sharp, Junr and Mary Sharp.

pg. 449:
Andrew Thompson examined in Augusta County, Va. 16 October 1818
Mary Thompson, wife of Wm. Thompson, examined 16 October 1818, Augusta County, VA
*NOTE: Mary Thompson, apparently the daughter of Robert and Letitia Sharp, married a Thompson. In the 1st paragraph, shows, "Andrew Thompson and Mary his wife", yet the examination in Augusta County, shows " Mary Thompson, wife of Wm. Thompson". Was she married to William Thompson and Andrew was her son??

After Robert was killed, Letitia Sharp (Sharp) married John Clark, 29 Jan 1800 (Blount Co. Marriages by Will E. Parham 1982)

CHILDREN OF ROBERT & LETITIA SHARP:

1. JOHN SHARP, b. 17 Feb 1780, TN, d. 6 May 1840, Monroe Co, Tn.
*NOTE: I feel certain that this John Sharp is the son of Robert & Letitia Sharp but I fail to understand why he is listed as "Jr" in the above references, as he would not have been a Jr. One explaination is that he used Jr. to distinguish himself from his grandfather or grandfathers. Theory is that both paternal and maternal grandfathers was a John Sharp.

James A. Sharp, twice married and the father of fourteen children, seven by each wife.
It has always remained a mystery, why James A. Sharp, moved to Alabama in his " old age ". He was born in TN, had family there, and owned property there. What enticed him to leave Tennessee? He may have gone to Georgia before moving to Alabama.

Living with brother James A. in 1850 census.
1860 census, living in household of another person and not married.
Not found in 1870. From the 1880 census, we learn John had
a son, Joseph A. born 1867. Which indicates he married ca 1865-66
1st wife, name unknown.

1880 census, page 84 #9, John is found married to Delilah B.
Apparently she was a widow Gann, as two children are listed as step-children, Mary M. Gann, age 15 and Tardelia Gann, age 10. Thus putting the 2nd marriage between 1870 and 1880.
Since there is a four year period between child #4 and #5, I speculate that John married Delilia ca 1876-77 and that Deliliah is the mother of child # 5.
