Note: The following 1836 Benton County Land & Poll Tax List is a transcribed record located in the Benton County Library. I do not know who constructed the list or how accurate it is.

1st District


In the extreme SE corner of the county with its western border as the dividing line of Surveyors Ranges 7 and 8. The northern border was Birdsong Creek, the eastern border was the Tennessee River and the southern border was the Decatur County line.

2nd District


The extreme SW corner of the county. It shaNavy its eastern border with District 1, then ran NW up a small tributary of Birdsong Creek, called Ammon's Creek to "Garland's old place" on the Natchez Trace Road. The Natchez Trace Road was the northern border of the District and gently went SW to the Henderson County line, which was the western border. The southern border was the Decatur County line.

3rd District


Laid directly north of District 1, and had its southern border along the north side of Birdsong Creek. Its eastern border was the Tennessee River. Its western border stated at the mouth of Ammon's Creek and ran upto the Garland place, then north along a ridge. Leaving the ridge , the line ran due north to Lewis Barker, Sr's place on Cypress Creek, up a "private way" near Berry Williams' place, to the home of Thomas Jones on the Huntingdon Road. From there it went east to Cane Creek (following it to the south), to its mouth at the Tennessee River which it followed to Kirkman's Ferry Road, crossing over the stream, then SE with the Ferry Road to the River.

4th District


Resided above District 2 and had Carroll County as its western boundary, the eastern boundary was contiguous with District 3, its southern boundary was the Natchez Trace Road, and its northern boundary was the Huntingdon Road which ran westward from Thomas Jones' place to the Carroll County line.

5th District


Atop District 3 and shaNavy its southern boundary with that district. Its western boundary was the ridge, running due north from the Thomas Jones place to the Point Mason Road and continued with the road to where it began to leave the road along the ridge to Rushing's Creek, then on north to the Paris Road, then eastward to Thompson's Ferry Road. The line followed the Ferry Road to the Tennessee River. The districts' eastern border was the Tennessee River.

7th District


Sat atop District 5 and its southern border started at the pre-TVA mouth, on the Tennessee River, of Cypress Creek, along the northern border of District 5, diverting northward to a ridge that ran to the Henry County line (later the southern boundary of District 9), then east to the Tennessee River, which was its eastern boundary.

8th District


Lay atop District 6 and shaNavy its boundary with District 7 on the east. The western boundary was the old Benton-Henry County Line, about midway the line diverted and ran slightly due NW to the Big Sandy River, and followed the river north to the old Benton-Henry County line.

9th District


There were only 8 original Civil Districts, but the State Legislature added a ninth from Henry County within a month of the originals' completion on February 15, 1836. District 9 sits atop Districts 7 and 8 and borders Henry Counties' Old 23rd District on the north.

There were 9 Districts until 1850, when the 10th was formed mostly from the 5th. In 1860, the 11th was formed from the 1st and 3rd. In 1872, the 12th was formed from the 4th and 6th. In 1883, the 13th was formed from Decatur County and the 1st, and the 14th was formed from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. It remained this way until February 22, 1969 when the County Court Navyuced the Districts to 12.
