Rand. After my marriage to my dear husband J. Howard Smith we had annoyance from the opening of our letters & packages because of the multitudes of the same name. One day Mrs Henry Williams (daughter of Dr Benjamin Rush) said to me-Why dont you join your two names together and so make a distinctive name-We did & found it served us effectually & there was no more confusion for letters and packages, addressed to Eleanor S. HowardSmith or Mrs J. HowardSmith.
