Chicksaw Queries

ADMINISTRATOR

IN posting Cherokee related queries, let me offer some assistance. (1) be as specific as you can about place of residence. The board is responsive to questions about the Cherokee Nation - which is now located in OK, but which at one point was in TN and the adjacent southeast. (2) Don't assume that the reader knows you mean "Dickson county, TN", when it might just as well be Dickson county, Alabama or Texas. (3) Read the historical information posted on the First People of Tennessee Project site. There is quite a lot of helpful information, and don't omit looking at the maps, a wonderful resource. Be as specific as you can about the who, where and when you are inquiring of. Know this. The Cherokee had surrendered all their lands in TN and were removed *as a people" by 1839. The Chickasaw too were removed by that time. Both Nations had and continue to have laws about who they - Indian people themselves - consider to be "Cherokees" or "Chickasaws". If you have questions about that, ask.

TODD

my paternal grandfather hugh blaine TODD lived in winchester, kentucky (clark County or shelby county nearby). I was told that his grandmother was a cherokee indian (native american) or was half cherokee indian (native american). I know this is a very general query but i thought it might be a place to start. My grandfather might also have grown up around eastern kentucky. my grandfather's, father was shot and murdered near a train station when my grandfather was just a boy. I am very proud of my heritage. My father who is deceased now and I have gotten compliments that we have some of the facial features of cherokee native americans.I would like to learn more about this part of my family history, if possible. Thank you.

RESPONSE TO:KYLE, THOMPSON, ARNWINE

Posted query": "KYLE, THOMPSON, ARNWINE I am looking for information on my GG Grandmother Marthie Adeline "Addie" KYLE (1841- 1921) who married John THOMPSON. The information I have says that they were married in Union Grove, TN in Sept 1859. They lived in McMinn, TN and she is buried in Union McMinn Baptist Church Cemetery. Family lore says that Addie was 1/2 Cherokee. I have a photo of John and Addie and she has native american features. Does anyone have any information on Addie, or her parents? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tamela Arnwine Fletcher tammy.fletcher@mac.com Submitted on Mon Jul 20 23:57:52 CDT 2009

RESPONSE:
The Cherokee ceded away the last of their TN lands effective 1835. At that time, the bulk of the Cherokee Nation was removed to Indian Territory, and those who remained in TN became U.S. citizens, and pur aside their identities and "offical" connection to the Cherokee Nation.
The names listed in this posting do not appear on any Eastern Cherokee enumeration of citizens from 1835-1924. Neither do these folk appear of the Guion Miller Roll of Eastern Cherokee entitled to a special governmental payment. Addie is enumerated in the 1900 Fed census of McMin county TN. She was b. Jun 1841 in TN, and lists both her parents as born in TN. She and her listed children are enumerated as white. One cannot establish an American Indian connection from a photograph. Although an absolute definitive answer is not possible with identifying Addie Kyle's parents, the odds are overwhelming that there is no Cherokee connection. It is my conclusion that there is no acceptable genealogical evidence presented to support a belief that Addie Kyle Thompson was Indian. good luck gd

REPLY TO MAHALA, PARDUE, LAWSON

Admins' response to: "MAHALA, PARDUE, LAWSON Please help me. I am researching my family tree and have come to a roadblock. It seems that Mahala PARDUE LAWSON is an ancestor along with William LAWSON. I cannot find any other information about either persons. Is there Native American ancestry through Mahala? We have heard a possibility of Cherokee? Who are Mahala's parents? Where was she born? Is there any official documentation of her Native American ancestry? If you have any information please call (715) 222-1892 or e-mail setz0010@umn.edu Will Setzer setz0010@umn.edu Submitted on Tue Jul 21 00:42:18 CDT 2009 " This posting should be directed to a PARDUE or LAWSON surname board. There is nothing at all to even hint of any sort of American Indian connection for this group of people. Further, regardless of what type board you send it to, without some additional BASIC information identifying the the people you are seeking, no one is likely to be able to help you. Go back and read the post
