Dr. Edwin S. Carr, a physician and surgeon at Castalian Springs, Sumner County, was the only child born to the marriage of James C. and Martha (Martin) Carr. He was born in Sumner County, February 2, 1853. Our subject's great-grandfather, Jackie Carr, was a native of Virginia, and one of the pioneers of Sumner County, being a man of prominence and ability. He wrote a history called "Early Times in Tennessee." His grandfather, Sewell Carr, was born in the part of Sumner County that is now Trousdale County. His father was born in Sumner County in 1828. He was raised and educated in the county, and was twice married: first to our subject's mother, in 1851; then to Miss Kate Harlan in 1855. He died in 1855. He was a man of good business qualifications, and an extensive dealer in live stock, and was a volunteer in the Mexican war, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The mother was born in Sumner County in 1833, and died in 1853. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Our subject was raised by his grandfathers, Sewell Carr and Abram Martin. He was educated at White Creek Springs, Tenn., and in 1871 commenced the study of medicine under Dr. Woodson, of Gallatin. In 1872-73 he attended lectures at the Louisville University, and graduated from the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia in 1874, remaining in Philadelphia for six months as resident physician of the Presbyterian hospital. He then returned to his home and practiced until 1880, when he moved to Castalian Springs, and is regarded as one of the most successful physicians in the county, and has a large and lucrative practice. Dr. Carr owns 170 acres of fine land, five and a half miles east of Gallatin on the Hartsville pike. January 14, 1875, he married Miss Eliza, daughter of Ben F. and Anna V. Jameson, of Sumner County, but natives of Kentucky. They have two children: Anna V. and James F. Mrs. Carr was born in Sumner County, in 1854. She is a faithful member of the Christian Church. Dr. Carr is a well posted man and has many friends.
