Samuel W. Hubbard, Sr. 71, well known resident of Winnfield for the past 16 years, died at his residence at 403 N. Jones Street at 5:15 A. M. Tuesday after a lingering illness.

Last rites were conducted at the residence at 3 P. M. Wednesday with the Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating and interment was in the Winnfield City Cemetery under the direction of the Southern Funeral Home. Active pallbearers included Earl Applewhite, Elton Brewton, Charlie Bright, Glenn Page,  J. L. Prudholme and Dennis Shell, and honorary pallbearers  were  R. T. Tucker,  L. V. Garper, R. R. Pate of Ringgold and Roy Tarrer of Forrest, Mississippi.

Mr. Hubbard is survived by his wife, Mamie Haney, a native of Missouri; three sons, S. W. Hubbard, Jr., of Fort Wayne, Indiana, John C. Hubbard of Winnfield, and James T. Hubbard of Hattisburg, Mississippi; two daughters;  Mrs. Stella Skains of  Winnfield and  Mrs. Elizabeth Reinau of  Palatka,  Florida; three  brothers; Albert Hubbard of Elk City,  Oklahoma,  Arthur Hubbard of  Old Hickory, Tennessee and Oscar Hubbard of Santa Anna, California and a sister, Mrs. Betty Sefton of St. Louis, Missouri.

A native of Chestnut Mound, Tennessee, Mr. Hubbard was born September 23, 1880.  He was married on October 16, 1916 and the family moved to Winnfield in 1935.  Although he was employed as an insurance salesman for the past several years, he was active for most of his life in sawmill work and his first employment after moving to Winn Parish was supervising the construction of a sawmill and shingle mill near Saline Lake for H. P. Huddleston. He later set up the first mill operated by the Thomas Lumber Company and at various times he constructed and sawed lumber for other smaller lumber mills in this section. In addition to his sawmill work, he was also employed before moving to Louisiana as a thresher during the wheat harvesting seasons.

Mr. Hubbard was a member of the Catholic Church. He was a popular figure in Winnfield; a fact attested to by the scores of acquaintances who paid their respects to the bereaved family at the residence and at his interment.
