Kemp, Asa Elster Jr.  1918-2000

 

 

Mr. Asa Kemp Jr., age 81 of the Defeated Creek Community, died at 10:10 p.m. Friday evening, June 30, 2000 at the Carthage General Hospital following an extended illness. Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home and Burial followed in the Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.  Eld. Floyd Ferguson and Bro. Gary Lee officiated.

 

Mr. Kemp was born September 10, 1918 in the Difficult Community of Smith County, the Son of the late Sallie Bullard Kemp and Asa Elster Kemp, Sr. On July 4, 1940 he was married to the Former Lois Grigg of Defeated Creek. Mr. Kemp was a Truck Driver for Time/D.C. before suffering a debilitating stroke in 1959, a condition he had coped well with for over forty years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Sea Bee's. Mr. Kemp was a longtime member of the Cornwells Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

 

Mr. Kemp was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathy Mundy and a sister who died in infancy; and by a brother, J.B. Kemp. Surviving, in addition to his wife of sixty years, is a Son, Steve Kemp, a granddaughter, Rachel Green and husband.  Chas, and a great-granddaughter, Caely Green, all of Defeated Creek; grandson, Stevie Kemp of Carthage; sister, Ruth Anderson and husband, Ralph; brother, Dewey Kemp and wife Evelyn, all of Defeated Creek.  Sanderson of Carthage.

June 30, 2000. Survived by wife, Lois Kemp to whom he was married July 4, 1940; son, Steve Kemp; granddaughter, Rachel Green all of Defeated Creek; grandson, Stevie Kemp of Carthage; great granddaughter, Caley Green; sister, Ruth Anderson; brother, Dewey Kemp both of Defeated Creek. Services will be held 3 p.m., Monday from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with Elder Floyd Ferguson and Bro. Gary Lee officiating. Pallbearers: Chris, Charles, Johnny and Key Kemp, Terry Mundy, Lance Anderson, Ronnie Carver and Gary Mahaney. Interment Defeated Creek Memorial Gardens.
