Porter, Clara Belle Gregory  1897 - 1927

The remains of Mrs. Bell Porter, Who died near midnight Friday at her home north of Hartsville after a short illness from pneumonia were brought back to her old home in the Mace`s Hill section for interment in the Gregory Graveyard, the writer conducted funeral services in the presence of a large gathering of sorrowing friends and relatives late Saturday afternoon, after which the body was laid to rest beside that of her father who died in August 1919.

Mrs. Porter is survived by her husband, Lee Porter, a farmer, six children, four sons and two daughters, the oldest child being only eleven years of age and the baby being only three weeks old; her mother Mrs. Laura Gregory, of Dickson Springs; three brothers, Presley, Bryan, and Webb Gregory all of near Dixon Springs, four sisters, Mrs. Mattie McClanahan of Nashville, Mrs. Annie Gregory of Lebanon; and misses Alice and Katherine, both with their mother; and a host of other relatives.

The deceased, who, was in her 31st year, was a faithful member of Mace`s Hill Baptist Church. She was a good Christian woman, loved and respected by all who knew her. She was a daughter of the late Monroe Gregory. It was one of the saddest funerals the writer ever tried to conduct for the reason that the deceased was his childhood playmate, schoolmate, both of us were converted in the same meeting, both were baptized the same day; and the sad fact of her leaving six almost helpless children. The broken-hearted husband and father will leave his home near Hartsville and come to make his home with his mother-in-law, who has offered to help care for the motherless grandchildren. The hundreds of friends and relatives of the family join the writer in deep sympathy.
