William Hopson to Joel Gregory a tract of land on Peytons Creek
Joel L. Gregory (my ggg-grandfather) b. Abt. 1810 TN, son of Jeremiah Gregory and
Barbara Rawls Gregory. He married Mary Jane Hesson b. Abt. 1809 TN. Folklore is
that Jeremiah Gregory died at Peytons Creek, Smith Co., TN at the homesite. He can
be seen living with Joel and his family in the 1850 Smith Co. census at the age of 84.

Deed Book M, Page 396 - 8 October 1835


State of Tennessee }   This indenture made and entered into
Smith County    }between William Hopson and Joel
Gregory both of the county of Smith and state aforesaid witness-
eth that the said William Hopson for and in consideration
of the sum of five dollars to him in hand paid does sell,
transfer and convey all the right to the claim and interest that
he and his heirs has in and to a certain parcel or tract of land
lying on the waters of Peytons Creek above Mrs. Patsy Cleveland
which said land he holds as an occupant unto the said
Joel Gregory his heirs and assigns forever witnesseth my hand
and seal this the 8th of October 1835.

Smith County     }      before me Jonathon Pickett Clerk of Smith
County Court, William Hopson party to the written deed of
transfer and conveyance which I am personally acquaint-
ed and who acknowledged that he executed the deed of transfer
and conveyance for the purpose therein contained witnesseth my hand
at office this 8th day of October 1835.             Jonathan Pickett
