The 1779 Militia Roster of
Capt. Shelby's Company
Shelby's Fort, Squabble State

The following roster is for the militia company of Capt. Evan Shelby, which was probably headquartered at the Old Blockhouse, later known as Shelby's Fort, in what became known as Squabble State, due to being located at present-day Bristol, which now straddles the Tennessee-Virginia line, but was then disputed between Washington County, Virginia and Washington County, North Carolina. This same year, 1779, Sullivan County, North Carolina was formed from Washington County, North Carolina (both now Tennessee), and the Henderson-Walker line run, resulting in the Old Blockhouse becoming part of Sullivan County, North Carolina even though only a year earlier, it was in Washington County, Virginia.*

* Capt. Shelby had previously commanded a militia company in Virginia (See 1774 Fincastle County, Virginia Militia List), but exhibited his commission, dated 19 Nov 1779, to the Sullivan County Court, appointing him colonel commandant of the county (Squabble State).
