Wedding Anniversary of Robert B. Alexander and Sarah Taylor Alexander

A golden wedding, with a reunion of sons and daughters under the family roof-tree — the very same to which the groom brought his young bride fifty years ago, and where all their children were born and reared — well deserves mention in these "Notes." The event occurred in the vicinity of Holly Springs, Miss., but four families, children of "the happy, happy pair," reside in these bounds, also a large number of relatives, who are readers of the CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE. We refer to the semi-centennial celebration of the marriage of Robert B. Alexander of Marshall County Miss., to Sarah Madison, eldest daughter of Edmund Taylor, of Fayette County, Tenn., March 29, 1838-1888. Their eight living children were in attendance, except one, prevented by rain and flood; also a number of specially invited guests. The happiness of the occasion was well-nigh perfect, marred only by the thoughts of loved ones gone before, who were the joy and the hope of a charmed circle — thoughts, though, for which there was relief in the anticipation of another and better reunion. The wedding-feast was elegant and bountiful. The golden presents were appropriate and highly appreciated as tokens of love. There was no need of a marriage ceremony to bind hearts and hands bound in one fifty years ago. But there was an impressive religious service, Rev. John Barcroft, presiding elder of Holly Springs District, making a happy address, and offering a fervent prayer for the divine blessing upon husband and wife, and upon their children and children’s children. Mr. Alexander is a Methodist of the Methodists, son of parents celebrated for their devotion through life to Christ and his cause, as Methodists of the old type, early settlers in Mississippi, previously residents of Maury County, Tenn., and worshippers at Mt. Nebo, where perhaps not one remains to recall them, though they were pillars in the Church. Mrs. Alexander, whom St, John, if alive and among us, would call an "elect lady," is one of the old Taylor stock, formerly of Virginia and later of West Tennessee, whose youngest descendants now in the Church can trace their ancestry along an unbroken line of Methodists for seven generations to the days of Francis Asbury. The little boy on whose head one hand rests while the other makes this interesting record was present with his mother, and eyes, ears, and mouth wide open, "took in" the golden wedding of his grandparents. May he and his generation follow them as they followed Christ!
