January 5, 1849

A young man who boarded the steamboat, Tennessee, at New Orleans, La., without any money and in feeble health, was allowed by Captain Yeatman to travel on the steamer to Nashville, Tenn.; he died soon after reaching Cumberland River and was buried in Mr. Parish's woodyard at the mouth of Callester's Creek. He had said his parents lived in Bedford Co., Tenn.; his few effects were left at Yeatman and Armistead store in Nashville, for persons properly claiming them.

MARY THOMAS MORGAN wife of William H. Morgan, born Milledgeville, Ga., Dec. 17, 1809; daughter of Thomas and Lucy Maunger; moved to Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 1842; died Dec. 25, 1848.

ALEXANDER COVINGTON born Prince George Co., Maryland, 1777; died Warren Co., Miss., Dec. 16 1848; served in the Maryland legislature when young; moved to Washington, Mississippi.

MARY JANE STREET wife of Park Street, born Franklin Co., Va., Sept. 10, 1813; died Maury Co. Tenn., Nov. 23, 1848. Six of her children predeceased her; her husband and five other children survived her.

ELIZABETH ALBRIGHT daughter of Presley and Elizabeth Settle, Second wife of Thomas H. Albright, died November 23, 1848 aged 23 years, 4 months and 2 days old [July 11, 1825].

CATHARINE CASSITY wife of James B. Cassity, died Morgan Co., Ky., Sept. 9, 1848 aged 23 years; moved with parents from Wythe Co., Va. to Ky. Her parents were Henry and Christina Upehart.

MARY MALONE, widow of Thomas C. Malone, born Sussex Co., Va., Jan. 9, 1791; died Limestone Co., Ala., Dec. 5, 1848 in residence of her son, J. C. Malone.

FIELDING COOK died Yazoo Co., Miss., Sept. 8, 1848 aged about 60 years; native of S.C. but moved to Copiah Co., Miss. and later to Yazoo County. About a year before his death, he built a Methodist meetinghouse on his property called Cook's Chapel.

GEORGE ALLEN died Green Co., Ala., Nov. 10, 1848 aged 31 years; formerly of Prince George County, Virginia.

MARY ELIZABETH PERRY daughter of Robert T. and Sarah C. Perry, Maury Co., Tenn., born Nov. 29, 1847; died Nov. 17, 1848.

ELIZABETH HENRY WARE daughter of David W. Parish, Christian Co., Ky.; wife of James Ware, Jr.; died Dec. 27, 1848.

CHRISTOPHER WAGGONER, Humphreys Co., Tenn., formerly of Davidson Co., Tenn., died Dec. 31, 1848 aged 96 years; a Revolutionary War veteran. [His pension file R10995, reveals that he was born in Bucks Co., Pa., June 20, 1755; enlisted in American forces in Rowan Co., N.C.; had lived in Davidson Co., Tenn. before moving to Humphreys County.]

FRANCES MARTHA WYNN daughter of Major John H. J. and Frances M. Wynn; born Dec. 1, 1838; died Dec. 20, 1848.

SARAH JANE HAMILTON daughter of James and Jane P. Hamilton, born Lexington, Ky., Jan. 26, 1827; married John B. Cochran, Jr., editor of the Lexington DAILY ATLAS, July 18, 1848; died Sept. 27, 1848; typhoid fever.

CATHARINE PENNINGTON born and reared near Hopkinsville, Ky.; married and moved to Arkansas; died Jefferson Co., Ark., Nov. 16, 1848 in the 53rd year of her age.

JOHN TANNER, aged about 80 years, died East Filiciana Parish, La., ostensibly in Nov. 1848.

JOHN SCOGGIN born in Pa., Nov. 2, 1758; died in residence of his son, Jesse Scoggin, White Co., Tenn., Dec. 22, 1848; moved to Va.; married Sarah Brown; five children predeceased him, four survived him.

MARY ANN BAYNES only daughter of Lawrence and Martha Rowe, born Wilson Co., Tenn., April 24 1820; married M. H. Baynes, Jan. 18, 1838; died Davidson Co., Tenn., Nov. 10, 1848.

NANCY GILPIN daughter of David and Martha Williams, born Burke Co., N.C., 1775; married J. West, 1797; moved to Roane Co., Tenn., 1802 where her husband died; moved to Fentress Co., Tenn. and married E. Gilpin; he died and she moved to Audrain Co., MO with her youngest son; died Nov. 23, 1848.

MARY JANE WOODSON wife of John W. Woodson; died Christian Co., Ky., Dec. 30, 1848 in the 21st year of her age.

JOHN BLACKWELL BARTLETT son of G. M. and Elizabeth Bartlett; died Green Bottom, Shelby Co., Tenn., Dec. 19, 1848 aged 1 year and 15 days old.

WILLIAM J. W. SHAW youngest son of Rev. William Shaw, died on the steamboat, Talleyrand, near Hale's Point, Feb. 2, 1848 in the 20th year of his age.

WAITSTILL McCARSON, nee Johnston, born in South Carolina; moved with parents to N.C. where she married William McCarson, 1812; moved to Ala., then in 1834 to DeSoto Co., Miss. where she died Dec, 22, 1848 in the 55th year of her age.

Miss LUCY ROBINSON born Hardin Co., Ky., Dec. 2, 1820; died there Oct. 14, 1848.

ELIZA C. MOODY daughter of Daniel and L. C. Johnson; wife of Green Moody; born Oct. 8, 1829; died January 3, 1849.

SARAH A. FITZGERALD widow of Edward J. Fitzgerald; born Brunswick Co., N.C., Oct. 15, 1806; moved to Grenada, Miss.; died there, January 5, 1849.

MOSES HENDRICK born Amelia Co., Va., Jan. 25, 1765; Revolutionary War veteran; married Nelly Overly, Mar. 12, 1796; moved to Tenn., 1806 and to Logan Co., Ky., 1807 where he had a stroke October 1846; died Russellville, Ky., Jan. 22, 1849. [His widow, Nelly Overly Hendrick's pension application W2545, reveals that they married in Lunenburg Co., Va., Mar. 12, 1796.]

 

February 23, 1849

General ROBERT DESHA, former member of U.S. Congress; died Mobile, Ala., Feb. 8, 1848. From BIOGRAPHICAL DIRECTORY OF THE AMERICAN CONGRESS, 1774-l974, Washington, 1974, page 852:

DESHA, Robert (brother of Joseph Desha), a Representative from Tennessee; born near Gallatin, Sumner County, Tenn., January 14, 1791; attended the public schools; engaged in the mercantile business at Gallatin; appointed on March 12, 1812, a captain in the Twenty-fourth Regiment, United States Infantry, in the War of 1812; also served as brevet major; honorably discharged on June 15, 1815; elected to the Twentieth and Twenty-first Congresses (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1831); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1830 for the Twenty-second Congress; moved to Mobile, Ala., and continued mercantile pursuits until his death there February 6, 1849: interment in Magnolia Cemetery.

DRURY CARTER, native of Hertford Co., N.C., died Fayette Co. Tenn., January 26, 1849 in the 52nd year of his age.

Rev. EDWARD JONES born Grayson Co., Va., June 11, 1796; married Nancy Wheeler, May 9, 1816; licensed to preach in Methodist Church, 1826; ordained deacon, 1830; ordained elder; 1837; local Methodist preacher; died Dec. 4, 1848. His son, PHILIP JONES, had died, aged 24 years. Missouri.

DICEY MEDLOCK born in North Carolina, Aug. 25, 1808; reared in Hawkins Co., Tenn.; married John Medlock; moved to Ky. in the spring of 1826; a few years later moved to Hopkins Co., Ky. where she died Feb. 2, 1849.

MARTHA McGee, nee Matthews, born Londonderry, Ireland, Mar. 1825; came to the U.S. and married in June 1845; died Jan. 23, 1849.

Colonel FRANCIS INGE died Dec. 24, 1848; born Granville Co., N.C., March 3, 1797; lived a few years in Alabama but moved to Aberdeen, Miss. where he died.

NOAH D. EUBANKS died Carroll Co., Miss., Jan. 20, 1849 in the 20th year of his age.

WALKER WATKINS son of Richard S. and Amelia A. H. Watkins died Feb. 17, 1849 aged 19 months.

JOHN SUMMERFIELD LANE born Athens, Ala., Mar. 7, 1833; died in New Orleans, Dec. 5, 1848; diabetes.

NATHANIEL SHAW died Lexington, Ky., Feb. 15, 1849 in the 45th year of his age.

Dr. EDWARD TRABUE died Feb. 23, 1849 while studying medicine at the University of Pa his remains were sent to Nashville, Tenn., reached there March 18 and were carried to the family farm, Oakland, three miles from the city, where the funeral and burial were held.

EVELINA MARIA MOORE daughter of Edward Morecock; born Halifax Co., N.C., May 1818; married May 1842; moved to Shelby Co., Tenn., 1843; to Green Plains, Ark., January 1847 where she died May 24, 1849; had a daughter, four years old.

SELETA C. EPPES daughter of Josiah and Nancy Bonner; born May 5, 1823; died May 7, 1849. Carroll Parish, La., widow of John W. Eppes.

MARY W. McCRORY wife of Thomas McCrory, Williamson Co., Tenn., died May 28, 1849 in the 54th year of her age. Her son, WILLIAM McCRORY, died June 6, 1849 in the 20th year of his age. Her son, JAMES McCRORY, died June 7, 1849 in the 18th year of his age. All from cholera.

ELIZA F. WELLER wife of F. Weller, died Miss. Co., Ark., April 28, 1849 in the 43rd year of her age.

THOMAS KNOWLES died recently from cholera, ostensibly in Mississippi Co., Arkansas.
