MOSSES CREEK CEMETERY

Mosses Creek Cemetery is located in southwestern NcNairy County on land northwest of Mosses Creek. The cemetery was at first called Gooches Graveyard after Gooch Church, a hardshell Baptist church, which was built across the road from the cemetery. Elizabeth Carolyn Thorton Gooch's monument is the oldest in the cemetery. She died in 1867. The church was built on land belonging to John Thomas Gooch and the cemetery land was owned by Marshall Minton. Gooch Church burned and was never rebuilt, so as the years passed the cemetery began to be called Mosses Creek. The majority of the graves (over 175) are marked only by concrete blocks. Copied July 7, 1979.
