Obituary of Nelson McClanahan

THE DAILY APPEAL, see May 12, 1851:

OBITUARY.

Leaves have their time to fall,
And flowers to wither at the north wind's breath,
And stars to set - but all,
Thou hast all seasons for thine, O Death.

Died - At residence of Samuel McClanahan, in Jackson, Tenn., on Tuesday morning, 6th instant, of conjestion of the lungs, NELSON McCLANAHAN, in the 27th year of his age.
The deceased was a native of the Laurens District, S.C., but had been for the last 20 years a citizen of the place where he died. He was a young man of high hopes and promise and was possessed of all those qualities, both of hear and heart, which constitute the upright citizen and true gentleman. He possessed, from his earliest youth, a nice sense of honor and a chivalrous bearing which won for him both the friendship and admiration of those with whom he associated. At the summons of his country he entered the war with Mexico, in which he served with honor and distinction as a lieutenant in the 14th infantry under Col. Trousdale, participating in the battles o f the valley and at the gates of the city. In the . . . [unreadable word] walks of life and in the social circle he ever . . . [unreadable word] that retiring affability indicative of modest merit and genuine worth. But in the midst of his fervent aspirations, he has been stricken down by the great destroyer. The slumbers of death have closed upon his eye-lids, and he sleeps quietly in that narrow house whither all are hastening with rapid page. Peaceful be his rest.
