MAYO CEMETERY

Located about nine miles southwest of Jackson, Tennessee, via Steam Mill Ferry Road. Situated on a bluff on the south side of Johnson's Creek about 150 feet east of a cotton field, about .2 miles southeast of Steam Mill Ferry Road. These large, rectangular tombstones have all fallen. Read on January 29, 1996, by Mr. Hubert H. Williams, Mr. James H. Hannah, and Mr. Jonathan Smith.

Frederick MAYO, born November 6, 1774, died June 1, 1856
Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord, from henceforth yea saith the Savior that they may rest from their labours and their works shall follow them.

Martha MAYO, born December 5, 1790, died September 5, 1842
Farewell, mother we have missed thee, sadly missed thee at our home when in groups where we gather around the dear and sacred stone.

Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Susan M. STATAN, born December 11, 1816, departed this life February 16, 1860, Age 43y's 2m's 5d's

Hardy, son of Frederick and Martha MAYO, born August 14, 1828, died January 29, 1855
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.

(In his will, Frederick MAYO left 20 acres to his /second/ wife, Kitty, "including my dwelling house and other improvements" for life, except "one half acre of land immediately around my family burying ground. This I reserve and give to no person.") (Madison County Will Book 7, page 9)
