MT. MORIAH CEMETERY

Mt. Moriah is a large, old, and well-maintained cemetery in the Reagan community located on Mt. Moriah Road. The cemetery show evidence of past vandalism, especially in the large number of late nineteenth century-early twentieth century markers broken off a short distance above their bases. In 1992, several markers seemed to be out of place. Most of the damaged markers and those which seemed out of place in 1992 are about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way back from Mt. Moriah Road. David Donahue recorded this cemetery November 28, 1992 and checked and updated it November 10, 2003.

Blanch Buck, Alicia Adcox, and Anita Webb recorded this cemetery circa 1976. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Buck et al., Memphis, 1976), Vol. II, pp. 306-314. This is referred to as Buck et al. in notes below. Many entries in the Buck et al. record are in the form last name, first name, birth year-death year, with all other information omitted, including relationship information.

______, d. Nov. 16, 1895, "She was . . ." (broken, fragment) [may be daughter of Lucindy M. and William C. Ross]

Infant, 1914 [replacement; probably a Beacham]

I made the notes below about unmatched footstones in 1992. At the time my impression was that the cemetery had been restored after having suffered vandalism, and I felt several markers were out of place. However, some of the markers which seemed out of place in 1992 seemed OK in 2003. Maybe the markers were moved, maybe the footstone were moved, or maybe I'm crazy.

David Donahue, November 2003

G.W.B. footstone [could be G. W. Beacham, but if so it is in a different location than the marker]

J.R.B. footstone [might be John R. Bailey; if so does not match marker location]

N.J.B. footstone [does not match location for markers for either Nannie J. Bailey or Nancy Jane Beacham, though it might be the latter]

U.B. footstone [probably a Bailey; does not match location of marker for Uda Bailey]
