GIBSON CEMETERY

Gibson Cemetery is shown near the southeast corner of the U.S.G.S. Holladay quadrangle (1987). It is reached by turning south on Raymond Ballenger Road from Horney Head Creek Road. The access drive is the first gravel road to the right. The road leads downhill through the woods. Gibson is a wonderful little cemetery to visit. It is well maintained. It also retains much of the appearance of a nineteenth century cemetery. Thirty two graves are marked by pairs of upright fieldstones, something you rarely see now. The cemetery is surrounded and shaded by cedar trees. Gibson Cemetery is an excellent example of what the old cemeteries once looked like and anyone in the area should visit this cemetery once just to see this. In addition to the 32 fieldstone pairs, there is one unpaired fieldstone and one wooden stake marking unidentified graves. David Donahue recorded this cemetery December 27, 1992 and checked and updated it November 6, 2003.

Margaret Alexander recorded this cemetery July 25, 1976. Her record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records produced by the Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, p. 228.

Bettie Wilson of Lorton, Virginia, compiled a list of people known to be buried in Gibson Cemetery and included a copy in a letter to Anne and Leo Donahue, Nashville, Tennessee. Her list is referenced extensively in the notes below. She also provides the following description/memory of the cemetery: "I went to the burial of Lem Gibson in 1931. I was 7. At that time I had a strong feeling that it was nowhere to be found, seemed to take us forever to get there out in a field of leaves — very desolate, but didn't know the word of expression at that early age."
