BEAR CREEK CEMETERY

Bear Creek Cemetery is located across the road from Bear Creek Baptist Church. The cemetery is indicated on the U.S.G.S. Parsons quadrangle (1986). The church moved to its present site in 1902, but the cemetery is about 25 years older. There are few unmarked graves, primarily because footstones from late nineteenth century-early twentieth century markers were moved and used to mark otherwise unmarked graves. About 100 burials are unidentified and about 8-10 are unmarked. David Donahue recorded Bear Creek Cemetery November 24, 1990, updated it May 12, 1991 and summer 1995; and checked and updated it over three separate days December 15-20, 2003.

Blanche Tuten recorded Bear Creek Cemetery in July 1976. Her record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records published by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 34-53. Reference is made to this work where appropriate. Blanche Tuten noted 76 "unmarked" graves.
