JOHN EVANS, a sketch by G. H. Fielding
Born five miles from Baltimore, Md., Nov. 30, 1734; at age 14 years moved near to headwaters of Sam's Creek in upper Baltimore County (now part of Carroll County); there he died Feb 13, 1827; married Elenore Lamb who died in the 82nd year of her age. He was converted in 1764 to Methodism. He and wife had nine children, five living, David and John Evans; Rebecca, wife of Loyd Bennett; Elizabeth, wife of Loyd Selby; Sarah, wife of John Wesley Porter. The old Evans dwelling (built in 1764) stood on the old Liberty Road about 2.5 miles southeast of Stone Chapel.

Rev. WILLIAM JENKINS, North Carolina Conference, died December 19, 1911.

A tribute to Rev. JAMES G. CLARKE, who died in Tullahoma, Tenn., Nov. 29, 1911, by W. C. Sellars. "He was six feet, four inches high, well built, with a good brow, a kind eye. . . . He was a traveling Methodist preacher. After seven years in the presiding eldership - three years on the Lexington District and four on the Union City District - he was stationed again at Humboldt, Tenn. Here his health failed." Buried in N.C., at Wadesboro where his only daughter, Mrs. Bennett, lived.

Dr. JOSEPH THOMAS MILLER born Ohio Co., Ky., Oct. 14, 1840; graduate, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, 1870; located in Hartford, Ky., where he practiced medicine; married Jennie Short, May 6, 1880; seven children. Died Mar. 11, 1911. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

Rev. F. A. BISHOP died in Washington, N.C., Jan. 6, 1912; buried in Oakdale Cemetery.

Funeral services were held for SAMUEL CUPPLES at St. John's Methodist Church; he died Jan. 6, 1912 in St. Louis, MO.

ROBERTA MONICO RAY daughter of Rev. J. G. Ray, Tenn. Conference, born Mar. 26, 1844; died Britton, Okla., Aug. 20, 1911; married F. M. Ashley, Bethpage, Tenn., April 1866; four daughters.

ORRIE J. EHOLS [Echols?] widow of W. V. Ehols, daughter of Stephen and Malinda S. Simpson, born Danville, Ala., Oct. 2, 1852; died Hartselle, Ala., Oct. 19, 1911. Children, Eulah, wife of M. Pattillo, Lewis and George.

WILLIAM COLE WHITSON born Fayette Co., Ala., Dec. 1, 1846; moved to Miss. in 1866; married Octavia Turner (died August 1911), Oct. 16, 1878 and settled in Calhoun Co., Miss.; moved to the Miss. delta in 1892; six children, three surviving him. He was a "shouting Christian."

LUTITIA GILL died Clardyville, Tenn., Oct. 17, 1911 aged 44 years; married Hensley Gill (died May 1903), Sept. 1887; five children.

TOMMIE HARWELL, grandson of Rev. Clint Young, dec., died Sept. 22, 1911 aged abt 26 years.

SUSAN CARR RICKMAN daughter of Sual and Mattie Carr, granddaughter of John Carr, author of EARLY TIMES IN TENNESSEE, born Sumner Co., Tenn., 1831; married W. T. Richman, 1854; four daus., one son; died July 12, 1911.

ELIZABETH BANKS daughter of Carl and Christine Bricker, born Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, May 30, 1824 and came to the U. S. with parents about 1832 and settled in Hancock Co., Ill; married William V. Banks, Jan. 11, 1855; three sons. Lived in several towns and in 1882 moved to Versailles, MO and later to Florida but settled in Huntland, Tenn. in 1897. Died Nov. 6, 1911.

ALBERT THEODORE GOODLOE son of William Hill (died Sept. 6, 1834) and Emily Elizabeth Williams Goodloe (died Jan. 4, 1837); born Maury Co., Tenn., June 23, 1833; he and his only sibling, David Greenbury Goodloe, went to live with their grandfather, David Short Goodloe, Tuscumbia, Ala. until a short time later, their uncle, Robert Atlas Goodloe, became their guardian and took them into his home. The uncle's wife, Mary Lane Goodloe, was good to them. The boys attended the Minor School in Va. and he attended University of Virginia and graduated from the Richmond Medical College at the age of 19 years, 9 months; studied further at the city hospital in New York City; investing the money from his father's estate in an Ark. farm, he began farming in January 1854; married Sallie Louise Cockrill, Franklin Co., Ala., Nov. 29, 1855; moved to recently purchased home near the Hermitage in Tenn., 1869; served in Company D, 35th Ala. Inf. Reg., CSA; surviving the war he resumed farming but sold his Tenn. farm and moved back to Ark. where he farmed and practiced medicine. Joined the Presbyterian Church, Dec. 14, 1851 but joined the Methodist Church Sept. 9, 1860. He had written, "On Sunday, August 9, 1868, the Lord called me to preach, to be an itinerant Methodist preacher." He was licensed to preach in Methodist Church, Sept. 21, 1868 and entered the Ark. Conference; transferred to Tenn. Conference in 1869; among his charges latterly, Chapel Hill, Clifton and Union. He died Feb. 22, 1912; had twelve children. Buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.

TAYLOR, Robert Love (son of Nathaniel Green Taylor and brother of Alfred Alexander Taylor), a Representative and a Senator from Tennessee; born in Happy Valley, Carter County, Tenn., July 31, 1850; attended Pennington Seminary and Buffalo Institute (later Milligan College), Tennessee; engaged in making bar iron and in tobacco raising; studied law in Jonesboro, Tenn.; was admitted to the bar in 1878 and practiced in Elizabethton and Jonesboro; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1881); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress and for election in 1882 to the Forty-eighth Congress; practiced law and also engaged in the newspaper business in Johnson City, Tenn., in 1880; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Cleveland and Hendricks in 1884; pension agent at Knoxville, Tenn., 1885--1887; was Governor of Tennessee 1887- 1891; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Cleveland and Stevenson in 1892; resumed the practice of law in Chattanooga, Tenn.; again served as Governor of Tennessee from 1897-1899; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in January 1907 for the term beginning March 4, 1907, and served until his death in Washington, D. C., March 31, 1912; interment in the Old Gray Cemetery, Knoxville, Tenn., reinterred in Monta Vista Cemetery, Johnson City, Tenn., in 1938.

"He made it a habit for years to read the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah each morning before the day’s work had begun. "He liked old hymns like "On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand."

JEPTHA CRAWFORD JONSON born "now" Daviess Co., Ky., Sept. 10, 1833; died Greenville, Ky., April 10, 1912; moved to Ark. in 1855; cotton planter; served in Confederate army, reaching rank of lieutenant-colonel; taken prisoner at battle of Helena, Ark., July 4, 1863 and kept as POW in Johnson's Island until Feb. 1865 when he was exchanged; married Mary E. Gilson; practiced law; moved to Calhoun, Ky. in 1868; then to Greenville. Eight children.

Mrs. M. A. ALLEN born Iredell Co., N.C., June 20, 1825; daughter of Capt. T. L. Tucker; sister of General W. F. Tucker, CSA; married Rev. A. C. Allen (died Jan. 19, 1880), Nov. 4, 1846; seven children; moved to Texas in 1874.

SARAH JANE KOGER, Brockville, Miss., born near Dover, Delaware, Sept. 25, 1827; moved with parents to Mobile, Ala.; married Rev. T. J. Koger, Feb. 6, 1850; husband killed in Confederate army at battle of Perryville; she died Feb. 5, 1912.

LAURA A. TRAVIS oldest daughter of A. F. and Ellen Stovall, born July 4, 1851; married James E. Travis, Dec. 18, 1872; two children; died Dec. 18, 1911.

MARY V. BARNETT daughter of Rev. William P. and Jane Barnett, born Jefferson Co., Ky.; married Abraham O. Russell (died 1895), Sept. 15, 1867; children, Lena, wife of Joseph W. Moore; Lora, wife of George W. Weedon; Joseph, died young; moved to Nashville in 1908; died Feb. 27, 1912.

ELLEN E. ANDERSON born Va., 1826; moved with parents to Tenn. in 1849; to Hickman Co., Ky., in 1861 where she lived until May 1909; died Feb. 15, 1912.

JAMES HOOD born Giles Co., Tenn. Sept. 4, 1847; died Bartlett, Tenn., typhoid fever, Sept. 18, 1911; married Obie Phipps, August 27, 1867; one son, Ernest.

Taylor, born Haywood Co., Tenn., May 22, 1851; died where he had lived and was born, Nov. 11, 1912; married Emma Taylor; two daus., three sons, J. L. Taylor, Edwin Taylor, Allen Taylor, Mrs. Octavia Walker, Martha Taylor. A brother, Will A. Taylor, lived in Brownsville, Tenn.

CARRIE BELLE CASEY NANCE daughter of W. A. Casey, born Sedalia, Ky., Sept. 18, 1876; died near Mayfield, Ky., Sept. 21, 1912; married (1) T. S. Allen (two sons, Walter and Curtis); (2)A. C. Nance (two sons, Bryan and Rupert). Died Little Rock, Ark., Sept. 21, 1911.

SIDNEY A. BRILEY widow of Rev. Thomas Briley, Baltimore Conference, died Harrisonburg, Va., Feb. 2, 1912.

DORCAS ANN ADDINGTON, nee Barnes; married Virgil P. Addington (died Aug. 4, 1883), Dec. 4, 1855; lived in Hartford, Ky. where she died April 6, 1912; one child, Mrs. Jesse E. Fogle.

WILLIAM B. B. PORTER son of Rev. R. G. and Helen Porter, born Jan. 23, 1869; died Shreveport, La., Jan. 19, 1912.

Dr. ED A. MARTIN born Simpson Co., Ky., Sept. 28, 1824; died Cameron, Texas, April 10, 1912; licensed to preach in Methodist Church in 1843 and labored in the Kentucky Conference; graduate, Louisville University, 1855; located in Cameron in 1860.

MARY LEWIS SELF daughter of William L. and Alice Malone, born Colbert Co., Ala., July 19, 1833; died Mar. 12, 1912; surviving were her widower and three children.

WILLIAM MIKE TEER born Alamance Co., N.C., Feb. 16, 1850; died Mercer, Tenn., May 1, 1912; married Sallie J. Pentecost, Sept. 19, 1875; thirteen children.

C. B. WEBB born Bullitt Co., Ky., Mar. 16, 1838; died Ada, Okla., May 20, 1912; "brought Up" by an uncle, Rev. John Hall, local Methodist preacher; married Ellen Shadburne, Aug. 28, 1860. Buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Ada.

MARY RAYMOND GRISET wife of Stephen Griset; daughter of Rev. R. R. Raymond, Los Angeles, Calif., born Sipe Springs, Texas, Dec. 7, 1888; died Los Angeles, April 15, 1912; wife and mother.

WILLIAM A. OSBORN died Atlanta, Ga., March 1912; born Putnam Co., Ga., Jan. 16, 1826; moved to Bourbon Co., Ky., in 1833 where he lived until 1876; married Mary Cahal, 1883; having been twice married previously. Children of a former marriage: George, Pauline and Mrs. M. O. Adams.

WILLIAM H. EDWARDS died Jan. 28, 1912; married Jennie Barrier, July 1866; six children, surviving were Thomas F., Everett, W. H., Jr., Ada and Lela Bailey. Burial in Mercer, Tenn.

AGNES R. JOHNSON died Monroe Co., W. Va., May 24, 1912; daughter of William and Mary Hinchman; born Monroe Co., Feb. 10, 1833; married William Barnabas Johnson, 1853; children, Marshall A., L. E., Robert L., Manelius W., Frank, James A. and Ida and Mary.
