For the Advocate

            It becomes my duty to announce, through your columns, the death of our venerable father and friend, Samuel Richardson, of Gibson county, Tenn. Brother Richardson was a native of Virginia, born in Couchland county, August 22, 1777, and grew up a young man of virtuous habits, and marked circumspection of life, and was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth T. Hopkins, who proved herself in all respects to be worthy of such a man, (and is now with God.) Soon after his marriage, he removed to Rutherford county, Tenn., and in a short time was happily converted to God, and united himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and from that hour to the day of his death, was received as a most exemplary member of the church.

            At an early date he pioneered with his family to the Western District of Tennessee, then a wild, unbroken forest and settled in Gibson county; and as soon as his rude cabins were reared, and in a condition to receive and shelter his family from the blasts of winter, his next thoughts were to the homeless missionaries of the cross, who had also pioneered into that almost pathless desert, and were wearily wandering from settlement to settlement in search of souls for whom Christ died. They ? at once introduced to his humble dwelling, in which ? found a cordial Christian welcome, and were persuaded to offer their message of mercy, and very soon a small society was formed in his house. A few years more, and a large and comfortable house of worship was erected on his land, and then a large and beautiful camp ground was reared up in the same neighborhood, at which hallowed place many have dated their conviction of sin, and their spiritual birth unto righteousness. At this sacred encampment, our venerable father Richardson always kept up a large tent, where the hospitalities of his table, like the richer and loftier provisions of the Spirit, were open and free to all that would partake. In this neighborhood he reared and educated a large and respectable family, and lived to see them all, with perhaps one or two exceptions, converted to God, and members of the church of his choice. But some are fallen asleep, and have been gathered into the garner of God. One of the departed was a Methodist preacher of hopeful promise, and the lamented Benjamin H. Hubbard, D.D., late of the Memphis Conference, was also his son-in-law, whose stricken widow and orphan children present strong claims to the prayers and sympathies of the church.

            Brother Richardson closed his earthly pilgrimage on the 24th of May last, in the 77th year of his age, in full assurance of hope, having been a Methodist about fifty years. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace." The disease that was commissioned to sever the cords that bound him to the earth, was inflammatory pleurisy, which, after a few days of most acute pain, put a period to his earthly sufferings, but not until he had given the most satisfactory assurance that all was well, exclaiming, just before his departure, "Death has no terrors to me."

            His remains were committed to the dust in the family graveyard, amid the tears and sympathies of his children, and a numerous circle of friends, with whom he had long lived in the bonds of Christian fellowship, there to rest until called forth by Him to whom he had "committed himself in well-doing as unto a faithful Creator," at whose bidding he shall once more appear, all glorious and divine.

For the Advocate

            Another patriarch is fallen, Joshua McQueen was born in Baltimore county, Md., Oct. 15, 1746, and died, at his residence in Franklin county, Ky., April 17, 1853, and was, consequently, in the 107th year of his age.

            He was the son of Thomas and Jane McQueen, and the first-born of five children; and as he was the latest survivor of his father’s family, that Scripture was literally fulfilled which says, "The first shall be last, and last first." And as an evidence that he honored his parents, he lived long on the earth.

            Father McQueen enjoyed no educational advantages in his youth; but being endowed with a strong mind and retentive memory, he learned to read the Bible, which became the man of his council. He made his living by hunting, until 1775, when he enlisted in the service of his country for the space of seven years, or during the war. Soon after he joined the army, he was appointed Orderly Sergent, which office he held until the war closed. He was in seven regular battles, among which were Germantown, Monmouth, Brandywine, and the siege of the Black-horse, and also in many skirmishes with the Indians during a tour to the West under Macentosh. At Valley Forge, he was one of the sufferers in that memorable winter, when the fidelity of the soldier was thoroughly tested; during which time he was servant to Gen. Green.

            When the noise of the battle was hushed, and the war-cry was no longer heard in the colonies — when independence was established, and the war-worn veteran was permitted to return to the embrace of his family and friends, brother McQueen returned to his home in Baltimore county, where he soon after joined in marriage to Miss Margaret Baxter. Eleven children were the fruits of their union, the most of which joined the church, and lived pious men and women. Five of them have gone to their reward, and six survive their aged father.

            About the year 1790, father McQueen emigrated to Kentucky, and settled in what is now Madison county. Here again he was called upon to enlist in a warfare, the weapons of which were "not carnal, but spiritual," mighty to the pulling down of the strong holds of Satan. He was deeply convicted of sin, and received into the M. E. Church about the tear 1792 or ’93, by the Rev. John Pacy, one of the early pioneers of Methodism in Kentucky. From that time until death summoned him to his final reward, he lived an exemplary member of the church of Christ.

            Early in the present century, (the time not known,) it pleased God to take from him his companion. She died of consumption, after a protracted illness. Some time in 1810, he married a Miss Jemima Cornelison, daughter of John and Mary Cornelison, of Kentucky, who lived and died in the Baptist faith. His second wife became the mother of one son and four daughters. The daughters have all died in the faith, with their crowns in full view; and the son and mother are on their way to heaven with hopes full of immortality and everlasting life.

            Father McQueen was generally beloved by all who knew him. As a father and husband he was kind and affectionate; as a neighbor, he was peaceable and obliging; as a Christian, he was humble, pious, and devoted, ever letting his "light shine" under whatever circumstances he was placed. He retained his mental and physical powers to a remarkable degree, to the close of life. For many years past, he did little but read his Bible; and seldom was any visitor allowed to leave his house without hearing him read at least one of his favorite chapters. He spoke with great confidence of his religious estate, and a home in heaven.—With the aid of glasses, he could read ordinary print, until the last few years of his life, when he was almost entirely deprived of this privilege. But when he could no longer read, he spent his time, when alone, in prayer and meditation, and when in company, by religious conversation.

            In 1832, he removed to Franklin county, and settled on the Kentucky river, five miles above Frankfort, from which place he again removed in 1842, and settled three miles below Frankfort, where he ended his pilgrimage. His last illness was an injury in the hip and knee, received by a fall; and after lingering for six weeks, he died in great peace. His last words were, "I am ready, waiting, and willing," "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord; yea, saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." His funeral was preached on the 24th of July last, by the undersigned, at the Glen’s Creek Republican meetinghouse, from the 15th verse of the 17th Psalm: "As for me, I shall behold thy face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in thy likeness."

"E’en down to old age, all thy people shall prove,
My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne."
