W. D. OWNBY born Bedford Co., Tenn., May 10, 1844; served in 4th Tenn. Cav. Reg., CSA; married Emma Knox, Jan. 9, 1868 and moved to Texas in 1880; died Hunt Co., Texas, April 26, 1907 where he had lived since 1902; 3 daus., 4 sons.

ULRICA CROW youngest daughter of Hon. T. M. and S. A. Stevens, Webster Co., Miss., born Nov. 2, 1882; married W. O. Crow, Dec. 26, 1903; died Custer City, Oklahoma, April 10, 1907; besides two sons she gave birth to twins, one of whom died as she died when they were born.

ANGIE GAUT born Feb. 9, 1814; died in residence of her daughter, Mrs. Angeline Davis, where she had lived since 1853, except for two years, on June 20, 1907; married Rev. B. R. Gaut (died 1853), 1833; 5 children, 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

KATE HOLLAND WHITE daughter of John M. and Susan Clark Holland born April 1, 1833; died Nashville, Tenn., April 11, 1907; married Levi White, 1867; one daughter, Azile, wife of Charles H. Weakley in whose house she died; she had several stepchildren. Rutherford Co., Tenn.

W. R. A. YARBROUGH born Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 24, 1828; died Confederate Soldiers' Home near Nashville, Tenn., June 21, 1907; served four years in Confederate army; married Lydia Sweatt; one son, Walter S. Yarbrough.

JOSEPH HAMILTON son of Rev. B. and Nancy Whiteside Hamilton born Rutherford, N.C., April 15, 1839; died Los Angeles, Calif., June 12, 1907; during Civil War he was lieutenant-colonel of Dahlonega Company; captured and by federals and released from prison in July 1865; married Julia Stokes, Jan. 13, 1864; taught school and farmed; moved to Calif. in 1875.

HENRY SOMMERFIELD McBRIDE born Maury Co., Tenn., Oct. 12, 1848; son of William S. and Rosa McBride; married Fannie V. Waterhouse, June 21, 1882; 3 daus., 2 sons; licensed to preach in Methodist Church in Dec. 1870; served in the Tennessee Methodist Conference; died recently. His mother, aged 83 years, survived him.

Rev. JOHN MATHEWS, D.D., died St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1, 1907; born Philadelphia, Pa., June 13, 1826; of Scots-Irish descent; licensed to preach in Methodist Church, March 1845, and joined the Tennessee Methodist Conference in 1846; after long service he retired in 1902; wrote an autobiography, "Peep Into Life." His photograph is on page 20.

Rev. ABEL McKEE CHREITZBERG born Dec. 17, 1820; admitted as preacher into South Carolina Methodist Conference in 1839; still living, he retired late in 1892.

Rev. SAMUEL LANDER, A.M., D.D., born Lincolnton, N.C., Jan. 30, 1833; son of Rev. Samuel and Eliza Ann Lander, native of Ireland; his mother was a descendant of the Palatine Colony that fled the Rhine provinces and took refuge in Ballingarane, Ireland; he was well-educated; graduate, Randolph-Macon College, June 10, 1852; A. M. degree, 1855; civil engineer; teacher for several years; licensed as a local Methodist preacher March 30, 1861; preacher-teacher and president of Williamston Female College from 1873 until his death, July 14, 1904; married Laura Ann McPherson, Dec. 20, 1853. Children: Lily, dec.; Neill M.; Kathleen, wife of Rev. John Willson; Malcolm M.; Dr. Frank M.; Christie, died at age 6 years; Ernest M. The Doctor of Divinity (DD) degree conferred upon him by Trinity College [later Duke University], Durham, N.C., in 1878.

Reverend RICHARD T. WILSON, DD, Virginia Methodist Conference, died near Petersburg, Va., August 28, 1907 in the 60th year of his age.

KATHERINE MOORE daughter of Green H. and Zana Moore, granddaughter of Senator James Moore; died Oakland, Miss., Aug. 18, 1907 aged 4 years. [Repeated obituary in September 27, 1907 issue in which her birth date is given as May 29, 1903.]

PAUL ADAMS LLOYD Son of Rev. W. F. Lloyd born Columbus, Ga., June 20, 1898; died Kenna, New Mexico, April 12, 1907.

AMY JORDAN daughter of James and Lily Rogers Carroll born Sept. 14, 1906; died July 4, 1907; burial at Spring Hill beside her brother, Joe.

FOUNTAIN E. PITTS son of F. E. Pitts, Russellville, Ky., died July 26, 1907 aged 3 years.

MARGARET C. FORD daughter of F. A. and Mary Shell, widow of Dr. James R. Ford, born Newberry Dist., S.C., May 27, 1838; died Clay Co., Miss., Aug. 5, 1907; married Jan. 28, 1866; her husband died Jan. 18, 1894 leaving her with a son (who died in 1897) and 2 daus. who both died 5 years later, the elder daughter being the wife of Rev. E. G. Kilgore.

LAURA EDMONDSON DALY born Montgomery Co., Tenn., Sept. 2, 1862; died near Clarksville, Tenn., July 22, 1907; married J. N. Daly, Jan. 10, 1888; long in ill health she returned to the scenes of her early life, dying in the residence of her brother, John Edmondson.

JESSE L. BOOGHER, president of Boogher-Force-Goodbar Hat Company, St. Louis, MO, died there, Sept. 27, 1907; born Pleasant City, Maryland, Mar. 4, 1833; moved to St. Louis in 1854; had given about $67, 000 to church building funds in St. Louis.

BENJAMIN CHARLES THOMASSON born Nov. 22, 1877; died Monroe Co;, Tenn., July 31, 1907; graduate Hiwasse College, 1899; taught school for several years.

Rev. JAMES M. KING, DD, corresponding secretary of Methodist Board of home Missions and Church Extension, died Philadelphia, Oct. 3, 1907; born in Pa. 68 years ago.

Rev. WILLIAM C. CAUSEY, local Methodist preacher, South Georgia Methodist Conference, died Oct. 4, 1907; burial in Macon, Ga.; surviving him were his widow and 3 children.

Miss MARY JANE HOLMES, author, died Brockport, New York, Oct. 6, 1907 in the 79th year of her age; had written 39 novels.

Rev. J. W. CHALK retired Methodist preacher, No. Texas Methodist Conference died Pilot Point, Texas, Oct. 11, 1907 in the 82nd year of his age.

MARY FLETCHER WALKER born Orangeburg Dist., S.C., June 4, 1840; died Ripley, Tenn., July 20, 1907; daughter of William A. and Harriet Moorer; granddaughter of Rev. Joseph Jenkins, S.C.; moved with parents to Lauderdale Co., Tenn. in 1847; married Benjamin D. Walker when she was 18 years old; 6 children.

BENJAMIN FERRELL son of Hobson arid Martha Ferrell died near Oxford, Miss., Sept. 7, 1907 in the 81st year of his age.

Dr. WILLIAM BROWNING born Sumner Co., Tenn., Dec. 23, 1819; joined Methodist Church, August l836; licensed to preach in that church in March 1840; from 1849-1866 served in the Tennessee Conference, then transferred to Little Rock Conference in which he labored until he retired in l893; Confederate veteran; died Sept. 17, 1907; husband and father (2 daus., 1 son).

RANSOM D. STEELY son of James L. and Sarah Steely born Covington Co., Ala., May 3l, 1856; moved with parents to Mobile Co., Ala., 1865; married S. F. Wheat, 1882; moved to Washington Co., Ala. in 1883; owned a cattle-sheep ranch; died May 4, 1907; burial in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.

JUDSON FEMALE INSTITUTE, Marion, Ala., opened in 1839;
SALEM ACADEMY, N.C., established in 1802;
FISK ACADEMY, Blount Co., Tenn., established in 1806;
KNOXVILLE (Tenn.) ACADEMY chartered in 1811;

[Between 1782-1799 thirty-three girls' schools were chartered in North Carolina and many were established in Virginia as well.]

Turner, May 27, 1875; Methodist preacher; ordained deacon, Nov. 1875; ordained elder, Nov. 1879; founded Grenada College; pastored at Paris, Brownsville, Dyersburg, Tenn., Paducah, Ky., etc. [death date not provided].

MARY FRANCES STUTTS born Tishomingo Co., Miss., Jan. 19, 1849; married J. H. Stutts, Sept. 19, 1867; moved to McNairy Co., Tenn. in the fall of 1871; died July 1, 1907; 3 sons (including Rev. R. E. L. Stutts, North Texas Methodist Conference); 4 daughters.


Several of the people mentioned in this publication have their final rest in the cemetery adjoining the Methodist Church in Dancyville, Haywood County, Tennessee.

This congregation dates to about 1835 and has been active ever since that time. The church building here dates to 1850 and is known as the oldest standing church in the Memphis Conference. The venerable building and the burial ground nearby have been listed on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES for almost a decade.
