Soldier s Application for Pension

I, Andy Millsaps a native of the State of Tennessee and now a citizen of Tennessee, resident at Carringer in the County of Monroe in said State of Tennessee, and who was a soldier from the State of Tennessee, in the war between the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Tennessee, entitled An Act for the benefit of the indigent and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States, and to fix the fees of attorneys or agents for procuring such pensions and fixing a penalty for the violation of the same. And I do solemnly swear that I was a member of Co B, 59, Tenn. Reg and I surrendered in Co. 6, in the service of the Confederate or United States, and that by reason of disability and indigence I am now entitled to receive the benefit of this Act. I further swear that I do not hold any National, State, or County office, nor do I receive aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, and that I am not an inmate of any soldier s home, and that I am unable to earn a reasonable support for myself and family. I do further solemnly swear that the answers given to the following questions are true:

Answer: 170 acres land, worth about $1000.00 household & kitchen furniture, 1 mare & colt & 8 or 9 head of cattle

What estate has your wife in her own right, real and personal, and what is its value?
Answer: none

How have you derived support for yourself and family for the last five years?
Answer: by laber on my farm

Do you use intoxicants to any extent?
Answer: No

How long and since when have you been an actual resident of the State of Tennessee?
Answer: about 68 years

Have you an attorney to look after this application?
Answer: no

Montgomery one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing application, and who is a physician of good standing, and being duly sworn says that he has carefully and thoroughly examined _________________, the applicant, and find him laboring under the following disabilities:

I find afflicant suffering severely from enlarged prostate gland which causes retention of urine and totally incapacitates him for the performance of manual labor. Witness my hand and seal of office, this 8th day of March 1911

Monroe County. } Personally appeared before me W.H. Moser Notary Public of said County, the above named C.C. Carter and Z.J. Hurst, two of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing application, with whom I am personally acquainted with the foregoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made in this application are correct and true, to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in this claim, and that said applicant s habits are good and free from dishonor. And (can t read) further make oath to the following facts touching the applicant s service in the Confederate army:

State here what witnesses know of their own knowledge,
I (can t read) all his statements in regard to his service up to Seize of Vicksburg, Z.J. Hurst late of Co. B 59th Regt. Tenn, C.S.A. know that claimant served in raid Co. & Regt. From Jan. 13th 1862 to June 5th 1864 and made an excellent soldier during said time and that the close of the war he has been a good citizen and an honorable man.

Dear Sir I will write to you in reguard of my Pension Claim. I laid in my claim last April 1911. And you was not satisfied with it you said Taylor Hunt swore he followed me to Pedmont and there he knewed no more about me the reason he didn't knew any more about me he was captured at Pedmont and was sent to Camp Chase and stayed there until the war close and in October 1 I wrote to you and Captain Wilson told you he followed me through the war until the surrender at Washington in Georgia and there we was both parolled togather he told you to notify me at once if it were not all right and I have not heard from it please write to ma and let me knew something about it yours truly
