I have documentation showing that Jesse Rice was
in Meigs Co. as early as 1838. His wife was Sara Covington Owens.
According to censuses their children were Elizabeth, Mary, Lackey,
Mahala, John, Thomas, and Sara. Jesse died in 1855 and later censuses
show his wife, Sara and children continuing to live there. If you
have connections to this family, please contact me.

Seeking information in Meigs County, Tennessee as
to the location of Hickory Flats area. My ggg-grandparents were
Daniel GRIFFIN, Sr. and his wife, AON-TA-TA-QUAS-TA. They are listed
on the 1835Henderson Roll, but never emigrated west. Their son,
Daniel, Jr. etal. did move west, however. It appears that Daniel and
his wife and some of his family moved from this area later, possibly
relocating to Davidson or Henry County, TN. In 1834-35 Daniel, Sr.
and family listed Hickory Flats as their residence. They were
neighbors to Dennis WOLF who lived nearby at Big Spring. Richard
FIELDS lived near this area earlier on Sale Creek. He donated land
for a school. Was this the Hickory Flats School? Is any of this area
other than the school named Hickory Flats? What was the school named
after? I understand that it is a historical site, but I do not have
any information on it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I would be happy to exchange information. Thanks!!!

Henry MILES to Catherine WALLACE both
born abt 1833. He was in Civil War in Col. Clifts 7th TN Inf. Vols
before it broke up and was then transfered to 1st TN Inf Vols Co. C
but they wouldn't take him because he was of "Mixed Blood". Cherokee
Indian Blood, we believe. The Guion Millier Application of George
Washington MILES husband of Sarah Elizabeth Walton married in Meigs
County (Henry's son) stated that his grandfather was Samuel MILES and
his mother Vina. There is a Samuel in Roane Co. 1850 Census but he's
married to Jane (Jincy) Collins. Lavina Tuten (maiden name Baley) is
living next door. There is a George W. Miles (could be Henry's
brother) but he's 10. George was supposed to be born in 1850. Also, no
Henry is in the family. I did find there was a John E. Miles also
serving in the same Company as Henry did in the Civil War but haven't
sent away for the papers yet. I found Henry's brother George in
Oklahoma in the Indian Territory Census in what is now Sequoyah Co.

years old. Also in the same census is a Sally Lawson 60-70 years old.
In my research Tyra Lawson , my 4thgr. grandfather was born in Va.
He married in Roane Co. Tenn. as Tyra Rogers to Mary (Polly) Hart in
1820. Around 1826 he obtained land in McMinn Co. Tenn. He lived
remainder of his life in McMinn Co. Tenn. His daughter Lovenia married
a Mortimer SPRADLING and located to Meigs. Also His daughter Charlotte
married Walter B. ROTHWELLl andthey moved to Meigs Co. Tenn. While in
McMinn Co. Tyra went by his mother's name of LAWSON. Tyra's mother was
Sally LAWSON and his grandfather was John LAWSON. Believed to be the
same John LAWSON and Sarah LAWSON reported in Meigs Co. Tenn. 1840
census. Tyra's line reported to have some Cherokee descent . Some of
Tyra's children besides Charlotte and Lovinia were Caladonia married
to a SIMS, Leonard Bradford (Pat), Eli David, Andrew, Tyre Jr. married
