73, of Missouri City, Texas, formerly of Ripley, founding partner of Westfield Engineering, died
of cancer Sept. 21 at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ripley First Presbyterian
Church with burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Garner Funeral Home has charge. Mr. Smith, the husband
of Mary Ruth Smith and widower of Tommie Eaton Smith, also leaves two sons, William Smith of Humble,
Texas, and Burnell Smith of Eagle River, Ark.; a brother, Roy Smith of West Memphis, and two grandchildren.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Texas Medical Center Hospice in Houston.

Monday at Halls Funeral Home with burial in Gates (Tenn.) Cemetery. She was a member of Halls
First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sanders, the widow of Charlie Sanders, leaves three sisters,
Rena Wheatley of Ripley, Opal White of Halls and Jeanette L. Baker of Memphis, and a brother,

Crash Into Truck Fatal For Riplian
Ricky Lynn Cox, 47, a carpenter,
of 8558 Highway 19 West, Ripley, died Monday of last week, in the Regional Medical Center in Memphis,three
days after his 1982 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up struck the left rear of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer.
That Friday, about 11:40 p.m., Cox was north bound on US 51, nearing the Hatchie River bridge.
The Peterbilt, owned by Robert McDaniel Trucking, of Nappanee, IN,and driven by Jose V. Amorim,
49, of 248 Mountain Drive, Jerome, IL, was headed for World Color Press, to pick up freight. Amorim
was unhurt. Impact left much of the pickup adhering to the rear of the truck. Cox was thrown about
30 feet from the pick-up, which left no evasive tire marks, according to Highway Patrolman Marvin
Norfolk, seen at left in photo above. Patrol Lt. Tommy Smith, at right in photo, told The Covington
Leader that achohol was involved. The crash closed the north bound lanes of the highway for about
four hours. Services for Mr. Cox were at 3 p.m. Friday in Garner Funeral Home, Ripley, with burial
in Indian Creek Cemetery, Tipton County. He leaves three brothers; Eugene Cox, of Burlison; James
Junior Cox, of Silvertop; and Billy Cox, of Shreveport, LA; and two sisters, Peggy Sires, of Bossier
City, LA ; and Sue Theovald, of Millington.
