Mr. Preston Poff, 19, was killed by the “Chickasaw Flyer” near the factory of the Ripley Box & Basket Co. at an early hour Wednesday morning. He was an employee at the factory, and from where he lived on Brownsville Street had to cross the tracks of the I.C. Railroad to get to his work, but just how the accident happened we have been unable to ascertain. The young man had only resided here a few months, making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Pete Lundgreen. He was a son of Dr. M.F. Poff of Tomato, Ark., who was called here by his death. The remains were interred in Walnut Grove cemetery yesterday afternoon.

RIPLEY - James W. 'Billy' Powell, 80, retired superintendent of Lauderdale County Water Department and fire chief of Northwest Lauderdale County Fire Department, died Monday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Lauderdale. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher, with burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Garner Funeral Home has charge. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a former Lauderdale County commissioner. Mr. Powell, the husband of Vonteec Powell, also leaves two daughters, Cheryl Chism and Nancy Beard, both of Ripley; two sisters, Peggy Lyell of Ripley and Elizabeth Kerr of Des Arc, Ark., and two grandchildren.

Smith, Minnie
An angel visited in the home of Mr. J.W. Smith on June 4, 1926, at 10 o'clock p.m. and took from him, his companion. Mrs. J.W. Smith will be remembered as Miss Minnie M. Tripp; was born April 10, 1891; professed faith in Christ at the age of 16 and united with Mitchell Grove Church. On May 13, 1914 she was married to J.W. Smith and to this union were born five children, two of whom have gone on before. Minnie was a kind and loving mother and always ready to help the sick and ones in need as far as she could, and to speak to the sinners and try to get them to leave sin and be workers for the Lord. She is survived by a husband and three little boys, father, stepmother, one sister, one stepsister, three step-brothers, and a host of friends and relatives who mourn her death. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. Ewell Hughes, and were attended by a large crowd, after which the remains were laid to rest in Walnut Grove cemetery under a mound of flowers.
