Pneumonia Wednesday proved fatal to Mrs. Leila C. Nagle, teacher of the 6-2 grade at Maury School in Memphis. Mrs. NAGLE died at 7:30 a. m. at her home, 1259 South Barksdale. She was stricken Sunday, but went to school Monday out of loyalty to her pupils. She had taught at Maury for nine years, joining the school shortly after moving to Memphis from Ripley, following the death of her husband, W. T. NAGLE. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Memphis and an ardent worker in the Character Builders Bible Class. She leaves one son, Mr. Gerald NAGLE; and a sister, Mrs. F. C. STOLTZ, both of of reside in that city. Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the residence, the body was then taken to Ripley Methodist Church for services and interrment in Maplewood Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late R. T. COLEMAN, of Woodville.

(Wiggly) Nelson, 82, retired Ripley dry goods merchant and former alderman who had been chairman of the Lauderdale County Democratic executive Committee for several years and was a member of the city’s Gas and Water Board, died about 1 p.m. Thursday of last week in Lauderdale County Hospital, after several weeks’ illness. Services were at 3:30 p.m. Friday in his church, First Methodist, whose official board served as honorary pallbearers. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery, Ripley Funeral Home in charge. He was a Mason and member of the Eastern Star. He was a colonel of Gov. Buford Ellington’s staff. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Girlean Chandler Nelson; three step-daughters, Mrs. Willie Lee Allen, of Ripley, and Mrs. Betty C. Mannon and Mrs. Martha C. General OLDHAM was taken ill with a severe cold three weeks ago, which developed into pneumonia, resulting in his death Sunday about noon. He was born in Henning 87 years ago, and resided in the county all his life. When the Civil War broke out, he was fired with enthusiasm for the cause of the Confederacy and listed as a private in Co. M, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Col. William DUCKWORTH. He is survived by one son, Edward L. OLDHAM, of Cleveland, Ohio, and his wife, who before the marriage was Miss Daisy SCOTT, of Henning. His first wife was Miss Mattie Lindsey BACON. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Parker Owens, 77, of 186 Lake Drive, Ripley, retired teacher and widow of County Schools Supt. Edric Owen, Jr., died at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday of last week in Baptist Hospital Lauderdale. Services were at 11 a.m. Friday in Ripley’s First Baptist Church, in which she had taught Sunday School. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery. Born in Chattanooga, she was graduated from Tennessee College and attended the University of Alabama and Memphis State University. She was certified to teach English, mathematics, and social sciences. She taught at Luckett in 1936, Conner in 1938, Edith in 1940 Halls High School in 1943, and Ripley High School from 1948 until her retirement in 1971. She was active in her Home Demonstration Club. She leaves a son, Edric III, of Dry Hill, and a brother, William A. Parker, of Signal Mountain.

Richard Owen, 65, a farmer of Ripley, died at 10:50 p.m. Sunday in Lauderdale County Hospital he had entered Feb.20th. Services were Tuesday in the new Ripley Church of Christ, burial in Maplewood Cemetery. HURRICANE HILL. The infant son of Mr. & Mrs. C. F. Paris died Saturday about 10o'clock after two weeks illness with colitis. The death of Mr. J. R. Pennington at his home near Gates on last Saturday afternoon was a great shock to the many friends of this popular citizen and excellent gentleman. He had been confined to his bed only about two weeks, and while his loved ones and nearest relatives had been appraised of the seriousness of his condition, which might terminate fatally at any time--leakage of the heart--but few aside from his immediate family knew of his illness, and were therefore not prepared for the announcement of his passing away that brought so much sadness to a host of people in Lauderdale County and wherever he was known. An attack of flu hastened the end. About three months ago he was advised by his physician to retire from active labor and take all possible care of himself, and his better judgement told him to do so, but his great energy would not lie dormant even in the face of peril. He was the owner of a magnificent farm on which he lived, and it had ever been his joy and pride, and he literally wore himself out in the exercise of his great energies in making his proud possession rank in production with the best fruit of the soil and the finest blooded horses and cattle to be found in this section. Even when he was serving Lauderdale County in the capacity of sheriff--from 1904 to 1910--he did not relinquish his farming interests but gave to it general supervision. (praise of sheriff years....) Mr. Pennington was 68 years of age. He was born in Lawrence County, Tenn., moving to Lauderdale when a youth of 14 years. With the exception of the six years spent in Ripley during his term in office as sheriff, he resided in the northern part of the county. John Pennington was a citizen whom everybody admired for his genuine worth and nobility. (more praise...) The funeral services were held in Gates Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist Church of which he was a member, after which the remains were brought to Ripley and laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. The last sad rites both at Gates and Ripley were attended by a large number of people, many from a distance. Mr. Pennington had been married twice, 12 children being born to his first union, six of whom survive to wit: Marvin Pennington, of Nankipoo; Mrs. H.O. Mohon, of Ripley; Mrs. R.M. Murphy and Miss Lillian Pennington, of Knoxville; Mrs. W.F. Boyd, of Memphis; and Mrs. York, of Friendship. He is also survived by his widow and several step-children. John Edmond Pierson--The people of Ripley were unprepared for the great shock which came to them Wednesday morning about 9 o'clock announcing the death of Mr. John Edmons PIERSON at his home in this city. Ten days had passed since he was first stricken with a severe heart attack, and daily messages from his bedside were to the effect that, though still a very sick man, his condition was gradually improving, and having not suffered any more attacks, his hosts of friends were led to believe that his chances of recovery were growing brighter, though they realized it would take some time to restore him to the health and strength that he had enjoyed. He was the son of Blair PIERSON, survived by his wife, who was Miss Birdie COBB; two sons, John E. PIERSON, Jr., of Gainesville, Fla., and Tom Blair PIERSON, of this city; one brother, J. B. PIERSON, of Memphis; four sisters, Mrs. Paul VERNON, of Memphis, Mrs. Fay TUCKER of New York, City, Mrs. Sanford DRAKE and Mrs. B. C. DURHAM, Jr., both of Ripley. He was 52 years of age, a Presbyterian; burial in Maplewood Cemetery.

The remains of George C. Porter, who died at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Saturday night arrived in Ripley Sunday morning and was carried to the home of his brother, Dr. J. A. PORTER. The funeral was held at Maplewood Cemetery Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. L. O. LEAVELL and Mrs. Cleanth BROOKS. Deceased was the son of the late Dr. R. S. PORTER, was 55 years old and was born and reared in Ripley, where he resided until about 25 years ago. For the past few years he had made his home in Algoma, Miss., where he had established a chicken farm and had been quite successful in raising of poultry for the market. Only one week prior to his death, he was stricken with appendicitis and was carried to Memphis, but his condition proved it to serious to undergo an operation. Following this he was taken with pneumonia, which together with other complications hastened the end. He is survived by his wife; one son, Bates PORTER; three brothers, Dr. J. A. PORTER, of Ripley; Lynn PORTER, of Blytheville, Ark., and C. H. PORTER, of Henning.

Taylor Barbee Rice, 95, of Ripley, died Tuesday of last week in Baptist Hospital Lauderdale in Ripley. Rites were Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Ripley, where he had served on the board of stewards, with burial in Maplewood Cemetery. He was born at Ripley, Jan. 11, 1912, to the late Eugene and Annie Rice. In 1934, he took a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi. In 1937, he married Annie Laurie “Penny” Pentecost and worked briefly for Rice-Belton Hardware in Ripley. Volunteering for 42 months of Army service, chiefly in Europe, during World War II, he won the Bronze Star for valor before discharge, as a captain, Dec. 30, 1945. He later farmed in this county and worked as a supervisor for Universal Electric in Ripley. From his high school days to the end of his life, he was and avid ham radio operator. He leaves a son, Taylor, Jr., of 6295 Henning-Orysa Road; a daughter, Nell (Mrs. Thomas A.) Duke, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Ann Parsons, of Ripley; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. T. A. RICE, one of Ripley's most esteemed and beloved citizens, died at the home on Henning street late Saturday afternoon as a result of a stroke of apoplexy sustained while visiting in the home of his son near his residence on Friday. Soon after the attack he was rushed to his home, but he never regained consciousness. Mr. RICE was born at the RICE old homestead near Orysa on June 18,1850, and would have soon reached his 75th birthday. He was married 64 years ago to Miss Nina GREEN. Besides the widow, four children survive; E.M. RICE, Roy L. RICE and Miss Estelle RICE, all of Ripley, and Mrs. John Durhanville. One brother also survives, T.F. RICE of Orysa. Deceased is a member of one of the oldest and prominent families of West Tennessee. Rogers, leaves a great-nephew, Cliff Piper of California.

James Newton Samuel, aged 67 years, died at his home on Brownsville Street, Sunday afternoon, after several weeks illness, of a complications of illness. Deceased was a native of Mississippi, but removed to Lauderdale County when a young man and settled near Fulton, Tennessee. Twenty years ago he moved to Ripley and had resided here since. He was twice married; the first time to Miss Tabitha V. THOMPSON, who died May 11th, 1892 and on March 29th, 1893, he married Miss Minnie JENKINS. He had no children by either wife. Interment in Maplewood Cemetery.

Ripley - Frances Pauline Sanford, 76, retired restaurateur, died Tuesday at her home. Graveside services will be at noon today at Maplewood Cemetery. Garner Funeral Home has charge. Mrs. Sanford, the wife of Robert 'Bill' Sanford, also leaves two sisters, Bernice Jerden and Marie Kissell, both of Ripley, and two brothers, Dennis Hendrix of Ripley and Kenneth Hendrix of Henning.

Dr. John W. Sanford, a practicing physician in Lauderdale County for 40 years and a man loved and esteemed by all our people, died at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis at 8 o’clock Friday morning of last week. He had only been in the hospital one week, suffering from a malady which was hard for physicians to diagnose. The news of the passing away of this good man brought sadness to hundreds of homes throughout Lauderdale County, not only to those whom his skill as a physician had greatly endeared him because of his successful ministrations in alleviating pain and restoring health, but to all who knew him, for his genial personality had made its impress for good upon humanity in all the varied walks of life. Dr. Sanford would have been 64 years of age had he lived until Saturday, July 3. He was a native of Tipton County. After his graduation from the old Memphis Hospital College in 1886, he moved to Lauderdale County and located at Glimp, where he practiced his profession for many years. He came to Ripley in 1900. He had been county health officer of Lauderdale County and was a past president of the Lauderdale County Medical Association. Dr. Sanford was twice married. He was first married to Miss Celeste Sharpe, who died many years ago. His second wife was a sister of the first, Miss Frances Sharpe, who also preceded him in death. Surviving Dr. Sanford are four sons, Dr. W.V. Sanford, Burton S. and Robert A. Sanford, of Ripley, and John Sanford of Baltimore; one daughter, Miss Celeste Sanford of Ripley. He was a brother of Mrs. C.F. Sanford of Ripley, Mrs. Hattie Taylor and Mrs. Frank Cuthbert of Brownsville and Dr. B.R. Sanford of Henning. The remains arrived in Ripley Friday night, but the funeral did not take place until 2:30 Sunday afternoon, awaiting the arrival of his son from Baltimore. Services were held in the Methodist Church, burial was with Masonic honors in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mr. G. W. Sapp died Monday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. Edwin THORNLEY, at Arp, after only a few days' illness. He has attended a fish fry--a family reunion--at the lake on Wednesday of last week, and greatly enjoyed the bountiful spread and good fellowship which prevailed on this occasion. The following morning he was stricken with paralysis from which he never regained consciousness. He was a member of the Baptist Church and funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Maplewood Cemetery where the remains were laid to rest. He was in his 69th year, a native of Georgia, but spent the greater part of his life in Ripley. He is survived by three brothers and two sisters: W. B. SAPP, of Dallas, Tx.; C. J. SAPP, of Memphis; Mrs. Lucy THOMPSON, of Blytheville, Ark.; M. I. SAPP & Mrs. Bessie THORNLEY of Arp.

HENNING---Mrs. T. P. Scott---One of the saddest deaths to occur in our midst in sometime was that of Mrs. T. P. Scott Friday night, March 6th. Mrs. Scott was taken ill Wednesday with flu, and Saturday following, pneumonia developed in a very stubborn form. She was given every attention that a faithful doctor, two capable and devoted nurses and loved ones could render, but they could not stay the hand of death. The Master had work for her in His Vineyard, May the same dear Master minister comfort to a heart stricken father and guide the footsteps of four dear children who are left motherless so young, in the path of their dear mother. Before her marriage, Mrs. Scott was Miss Nora Boydstun, daughter of the late Ward Boydstun, and resided in Ripley for many years. Besides her husband and children, she is also survived by two sisters; Mrs. Clara Tarrant of Ripley and Mrs. F. B. Bradford of Gates; two brothers; C. B. Boydstun of Ripley and Elbert Boydstun of San Diego, Calif. The remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery Saturday afternoon, following funeral services held at the family residence.

The remains of R. F. Scott, who was found dead in his car in Overton Park in Memphis last Saturday morning, were brought to Henning Sunday. The funeral was held in the Christian Church at that place at 2 o'clock, after which the body was laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley. He had been shot in the mouth, and a pistol was found lying in his right hand, of course this could have been placed there after he had been killed. The circumstances surrounding his death will perhaps always remain a mystery. He left home in his usual jovial manner to go out for his regular morning ride and insofar is known, he had no business worries and his home life was said to have been an ideal one. He was 52 years of age, son of the late T. P. SCOTT, born and reared in Henning. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillie COBB SCOTT; sons, Fletcher of Memphis; and Charles of Clarksdale, Miss.; brothers, R. W. & T. P. SCOTT, of Henning and J. B. SCOTT of Covington; two sisters, Mrs. E. R. OLDHAM and Mrs. C. D. FLOWERS, both of Henning.

Mrs. Elizabeth Van Matre Shoaf, 76, of Fulton Landing, widow of former Lauderdale County Sheriff Charles C. Shoaf, died at 4 p.m. Monday in Lauderdale County Hospital. She had entered the hospital after having been severely burned by hot water in her bath. Pneumonia developed and proved fatal. Services were at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Immanuel Episcopal Church in Ripley, of which she was a communicant. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery, with Ripley Funeral Home in charge. Born in Holden, Mo., she attended St. Catherine”s School in Bolivar and Cornell Collage in Mount Vernon, Iowa. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star. She leaves two sons, Charles C. Shoaf, Jr., of Ripley, and Lauren M. Shoaf, of Memphis; three daughters, Mrs. Frank M. Keefe, of Ripley, Mrs, Jeanne S. Duncan, of Memphis, and Mrs. Arthur G. Hansen, of Clinton, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. A. L. Strub, of Union City; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Norman Cherry Sinclair, age 65, died at his home in Henning at 7:40 p. m. January 4, 1932. He had been in declining health for three years and was not able to overcome a complication of urimic poisoning and pneumonia, which caused his death. He was born in Henning, July 18, 1866, but in early life moved to California where he was reared. He returned to Henning in 1901 and was married to Miss Mozella HALLIBURTON, of Henning in September, 1904. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Brooks HATHAWAY, of Halls, Vera, William, Norma, and Mary Sue SINCLAIR, all of Henning. He joined the Methodist Church in California. Before his death, he told his loved ones that he was ready to go at anytime, trusting in the Saviour. His deepest regret was to leave his family with no one to care for them. The funeral was conducted at the Methodist Church in Henning, interment in Maplewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Senora Drake Speck, wife of W. G. SPECK, died at her home in Ripley Thursday night of last week after an illness of several months of heart trouble. Deceased was born in Johnson's Grove, September 20, 1859, and was married September 12, 1877. For 12 years she resided at Bells with her husband. Thirty years ago, they moved to Ripley. She was the mother of six children, three of whom survive; Mrs. Agnes SCOTT, of this city; Mrs. A. W. STEELE and Mrs. Murrell PARROTT, both of Memphis. She is also survived by her husband and three brothers, K. P DRAKE, of Memphis; Mack DRAKE, of Pine Bluff, Ark.; and Jim DRAKE, of Buffalo, NY. Mrs. SPECK was a woman of rare Christian virtues, gentle and kind, loving and loveable. She was a member of the Methodist Church, and in her death she has but transferred her membership from the church militant to the church triumphant. A large crowd was present at the funeral, conducted by her pastor, Dr. Fred H. PEEPLES. The remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. Mr.& Mrs. STEELE, Mr.& Mrs. PARROTT and Mr. K. P. DRAKE, of Memphis were at her bedside when the end came.

Mrs. Mary Lou Stanley, 54,former Ripley beautician, died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the home of her sister, Mrs. Viola GREER at Cedar Grove. Services were Thursday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Maplewood Cemetery. She also leaves a brother, A.G. BRACKIN, of Ripley; and two other sisters, Mrs. Estette LASSITER, of Memphis and Mrs. Wilma TIREY, of Jamestown, Calif.

He leaves three sons, Ted Sutton, of Ripley, and Jake Sutton, and Don Sutton, both of Memphis; a daughter, Mrs. Doris Sandlin, of Ripley; two brothers, C. W. Sutton and H. M. Sutton, both of Nashville; three sisters, Mrs. Daisy Nelson and Mrs. Thelma Sutton, both of Memphis, and Mrs. Leila Anderson, of Lawrenceburg; and 11 grandchildren.
