Wilbert Bond always fought for fairness -- Was former president of Tennessee NAACP. For Wilbert Bond, civic duty was about standing up for fairness, for his community and for his family. A past president of the Tennessee NAACP and former Memphis Alcohol Commission member, Mr. Bond died Friday at Methodist University Hospital of complications from prostate cancer. He was 81. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity CME Church, where he was in the male chorus, with burial in Love Cemetery in Halls, Tenn. Rawls Funeral Home in Brownsville, Tenn., has charge. The South Memphis resident was the state's NAACP president from 1977 through 1995.
Gloria J. Sweet-Love, the current statewide president, was a vice president during his term. She said he was a great leader who nurtured future leaders. "A number of his vice presidents went on to be elected officials and do great things," she said. His involvement with the civil rights group grew out of experiences growing up in segregation and a desire to make the life better for his family, said his son, Wilbert Bond Jr. of Portland, Ore. "It was very segregated, very Jim Crow. Having kids and growing up in the segregated South, he decided it was something he needed to do," the son said. A World War II Navy veteran, Mr. Bond earned a bachelors degree in 1950 from Fisk University in Nashville. While teaching in Murfreesboro City Schools, he earned a master's degree in education administration from what was then Middle Tennessee State College in 1965. "It was rough (going to school) in those days," he told The Commercial Appeal in 2005. "Some people don't believe me when I tell them I was the first Negro student to obtain a degree at MTSC but I have the article to prove it. The college was integrated in 1963 and I was one of 13 graduates in the January section of 1965." Wilbert Bond Jr. said, "He was working and going to school, as well as having to deal with being the only black face around." Mr. Bond retired in 1968 from teaching in Murfreesboro. He then became an equal employment opportunity manager for the Navy in Millington, from which he retired in 1985. But he stayed busy. He next owned Bond Training and Consultants for five years, providing teaching methods to military personnel. He became the AARP's vote coordinator for Tennessee's Ninth Congressional District. He was appointed to the alcohol commission in the late 1990s. And he led the Veterans Day parade Downtown in November 2005. "He just had to be doing something," his son said. "He thought it was his responsibility. He had a responsibility to the community to do what he could." Mr. Bond also leaves his wife, LaVerne Love Bond; two daughters, Loretta Grubb of Maywood, Ill., and Cordia Starling of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; another son, Thomas Bond of Memphis; two sisters, Mollie Rawls of Nashville and Bernice Burgess of St. Louis; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. - Pamela Perkins
