FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 1968
FIRE CLAIMED--two children as four others escaped the flames about 2 a.m. Sunday, when the frame home of Mr. & Mrs. Carl AGEE burned on Route 3, Friendship, seven miles east of Halls. Terry Lynn AGEE, 10, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles AGEE, of Halls and Edith Fay AGEE, 4, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Billy Lynn AGEE, of Maury City, formerly of Halls, perished in the flames. The cousins, along with Billy Lynn and his son, were visiting their grandparents when the fire broke out. Mr. & Mrs. Carl AGEE were taken to Jackson-Madison Hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation. Mrs. AGEE was released Monday, but Mr. AGEE, who suffers a heart condition remains seriously ill. Joint services were Monday in Old Field Methodist Church near Maury City, burial in church cemetery.

James Franklin ALLEN, 56, died Wednesday in his home at Central. Services will be Friday in ripley Funeral Home. Born in Blytheville, Ark., he moved to Lauderdale County in 1930. He leaves his brothers, John J. ALLEN of Baroda, Mich., and Jesse E. ALLEN, of Stevensville, Mich.; sisters, Mrs. Bessie VOWELL and Mrs. Gladys GOODMAN, both of Ripley.

Mrs. Ida Wallace ALSTON, 82, widow of William Fred ALSTON, Halls farmer, died Saturday in Lauderdale County Hospital, which she entered August 21st. Services were Monday in first Methodist Church in Halls, burial in Halls Cemetery. Born in Decatur County, her husband died in 1924. She leaves her sons, Elmer ALSTON and Bon ALSTON, both of Halls and Leonard ALSTON, of Poplar Grove; daughters, Mrs. Nettie CAVENESS and Mrs. Ollie Mae SMITH, both of Halls, and Mrs. Ola SUMMERS, of Dyersburg; brothers, Charlie WALLACE and Jess WALLACE, both of Decaturville; sisters, Mrs. Annie FISHER and Mrs. Ada MOODY, of Caruthersville, Mo.

Henry Albert AMMONS, 69, retired farmer, of 573 Somerville, Memphis, step-son of Mrs. Nora AMMONS, of Ripley, died last Friday in Oakville Hospital in Memphis, which he entered two months earlier. Services were Sunday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Lauderdale County Memorial Gardens. He leaves his wife, Ivy Bizzell AMMONS; sons, Willie D. AMMONS and Edward AMMONS, both of Memphis; half-brothers, Lynn AMMONS, of Ripley, Tommy AMMONS and Finley AMMONS, both of Memphis; his sister, Mrs. Ola CRAWFORD; step-sister, Mrs. Mary HOSKINS, both of Ripley; half-sisters, Mrs. Lela JOHNSON, Mrs. Nellie HEMBY and Mrs. Teresa GLENN, all of Ripley and Mrs. Laura LOGAN, of Memphis.

D. Webb ASHLEY, 58, brother of Mrs. Nannie WALKER, of Halls, died Thursday of last week en route to Parkview Hospital in Dyersburg, after a heart attack. A landowner in Glendale community of Dyer County, he leaves his wife, seven sons and ten daughters. (not named)

Arthur BALLARD, 67, retired farmer, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday in his home near Henning of a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Services were Thursday in Ripley Funeral Home, burial in Bethlehem Cemetery. He leaves his wife, Ella Hoskins BALLARD; sons, Woodrow BALLARD and Herman BALLARD, both of Henning; his half-brothers, George BALLARD, of Henning and Bill BALLARD, of Ohio; his half sisters, Mrs. Lillie HOSKINS and Mrs. Viola MAXWELL, both of Henning, Mrs. Scrap HERRON, of Ripley and Mrs. Annie Mae STANLEY, of Ohio.

He leaves his wife, Ida Lee Hathcock BINKLEY; sons, Ewell BINKLEY and Robert BINKLEY, both of Henning; Wm. Olin BINKLEY, of Arp, and Jesse O. Barney Lee COVINGTON, 77, who was born in Ripley. died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday of last week in Veterans Hospital, Memphis, after long illness. Services were last Friday in Memphis Funeral Home, burial in Memprial Park. A retired Naval Air Station carpenter, he had lived in Memphis about 35 years. He was a WWI vet. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary L. COVINGTON; son, T. G. COVINGTON; step- daughter, Mrs. Martin DENEBERGER, both of Memphis; and his brother, Guy C. COVINGTON, of West Memphis, AR.

James Manuel COX, 96, who was born in Ripley, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Before moving to Memphis in 1927, he was a watchmaker in Halls. He was a retired owner of Cox Jewelry Store in Memphis. He was a Member of Ellendale Primitive Baptist Church. Services were Thursday in Memphis Funeral Home, burial in Memorial Gardens. He leaves his daughters, Mrs. W. B. WELLS and Mrs. M. E. FLANAGAN; son, James E. COX, all of Memphis; nine grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.

Elbert A. DUNAVANT, 71, brother of Mrs. J. F. COLLEY, of Halls, died Sunday in an Arcadia, La. Hospital, Services were in Arcadia Monday. Reared in Lauderdale County, he owned an auto agency and extensive real estate holdings in Sarasota, Fla. He surrered a stroke on January 2nd while visiting his sister, Mrs. G. P. DANCE in Arcadia, and remained hospitalized since that time. Besides his sister, he leaves his wife, Jean Odiveries DUNAVANT; son, (unnamed), of St. Louis, Mo.; his daughter, Mrs. A. D. ALLEY, of Houston, Texas.

Dalton Ira ESCUE, 70, formerly of Forked Deer, died Sunday in his home in Memphis. Services were Monday in Eureka Baptist Church, burial in church cemetery. Born in Haywood County, he moved to Lauderdale County in 1940. A veteran of WWI and WWII, he was a retired interior decorator. He leaves his brothers, Henry ESCUE and Ellis ESCUE, both of Dyersburg, and Arch ESCUE, of Memphis; sisters, Mrs. Florence Brown, of Memphis and Mrs. Myrtle PERMENTER, of Dallas, Texas.

She moved to Memphis in 1942 and was employed by the city's insurance department for 12 years. She leaves her mother, Mrs. Leona E. LASSITER and her step-father, Aurthur D. LASSITER; her sons, Michael FELTS, Stephen FELTS, and Jonathan FELTS, all of Memphis and her sister, Mrs. Joyce SMITH, of Tunkhannock, Pa.

The boy was DOA at Lauderdale County Hospital. No charges against the driver.

Services were Sunday in Brownsville Funeral Home, burial in Concord Cemetery. She was a nurse. She leaves her daughters, Mrs. Frances FORSYTHE, of Brownsville and Mrs. Rebecca KIRKPATRICK, of Adrian, Mich.; another brother, Claude ERVIN, of Halls; and her sister, Mrs. Maudie PARKER, of Covington.
