SPARKS--A telegram received here Thursday announced the death at Kiowa,Okla.,at 5:45 p.m. April 27th,of Hewette L. SPARKS,resident of Florence from 1918,1924,a majority of which time he was employed on The Florence Times. Mr.SPARKS was born in Ripley,Tenn.,June 18,1876,the son of James L. & Laura MAYS SPARKS. Like all the members of his large family,he spent his life in the newspaper profession and at the time of his death was editor and publisher of the Kiowa Chronicle,which paper he purchased two years ago,after having been connected with it for six weeks. Surviving are an older brother, R.M. SPARKS,of Kiowa; a sister,Miss Pearl SPARKS,of Florence State Teachers College; and a younger brother, W.M. SPARKS,editor of The Sheffied Standard and the Tuscumbia Times.(Florence Ala.Times) CURVE--Mrs.N.J. HARWARD attended the funeral services of Mrs. S.A. PURYEAR and little daughter in Memphis Tuesday. ASBURY--The entire community sympathizes with Mr.& Mrs. H.A. LUTON in their bereavement,the passing away of an infant daughter. GATES--Mr.& Mrs.G.C. HARTMAN attended the funerals of Mrs.Stanley A. PURYEAR and her eight-year-old daughter,whose tragic deaths occurred at their home in Memphis at an early hour Monday morning. CHARLES REED BARBEE--Charles Reed BARBEE, 63, died at his home on South Main Street late Monday afternoon,after an illness of heart trouble which confined him to his home the past four months. He was the son of the late John Y. BARBEE,one of the early settlers of Ripley and one of the most prominent laymen of Southern Methodism. Mr.BARBEE was born in Ripley and spent his entire life here.For over a quarter of a century he was prominent in business and church activities,a member of the First Methodist Church and was general secretary of the Methodist Sunday school at the time of his death.He was holding the position of book keeper for Julian Belton & Co.,when forced to retire because of ill health. He is survived by his wife,who before her marriage was Miss Georgia MURREY, prominent socially in Nashville; two children,Murrey BARBEE,of Birmingham,Ala, and Mrs.Thompson KIRKPATRICK,of Owensboro,Ky.; three brothers, A.J. BARBEE,of Ripley, Dr.Taylor BARBEE,of Los Angeles,Calif., Isaac BARBEE,of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs.V.P. MORIARTY, Mrs.E.M. RICE and Mrs.W. DANIELS--Mr.W.A. DANIELS, 46, of Covington ,died at the Baptist Hosoital at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday after a short illness.He had been a patient there since Saturday. Mr.DANIELS,a deacon in the Baptist Church at Covington,was a traveling salesman for J.F. FERGASON Grocery Co. Surviving are his wife; two sons, W.A. DANIELS,Jr.,and John DANIELS,both of Covington; two daughters,Mrs.Thomas MOOSE,of Covington and Mrs.Earl ANDERSON,of Birmingham. R.C. LASSITER--The funeral of Mr.R.C. LASSITER, 59, who died at his home at Arp Tuesday night,was held Wednesday afternoon,conducted by Dr.O.Olin GREEN,pastor of Ripley Baptist Church.Interment was in Cross Roads Cemetery. CROCKETT, Mrs.B.A. BICKERS and Miss Mildred CROCKETT attended the funeral of Mrs. Laura TURNER in Covington, Monday. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ FRIDAY MAY 27,1932 JOHN EDMOND PIERSON--The people of Ripley were unprepared for the great shock which came to them Wednesday morning about 9 o'clock announcing the death of Mr.John Edmons PIERSON at his home in this city. Ten days had passed since he was first stricken with a severe heart attack,and daily messages from his bedside were to the effect that,though still a very sick man,his condition was gradually improving,and having not suffered any more attacks,his hosts of friends were led to believe that his chances of recovery were growing brighter,though they realized it would take some time to restore him to the health and strength that he had enjoyed. He was the son of Blair PIERSON,survived by his wife,who was Miss Birdie COBB; two sons, John E.PIERSON,Jr.,of Gainesville,Fla.,and Tom Blair PIERSON,of this city; one brother,J.B. PIERSON,of Memphis; four sisters, Mrs.Paul VERNON,of Memphis, Mrs.Fay TUCKER of New York,City, Mrs.Sanford DRAKE and Mrs. B.C. DURHAM,Jr.,both of Ripley. He was 52 years of age,a Presbyterian; burial in Maplewood Cemetery. DEAD IN FLORIDA--News was received here of the death on May 17th of Mrs.W.C. PERSON,of Orlando,Fla.,formerly Miss Mary SANFORD,daughter of the late Capt.& mrs.Henry SANFORD,of this county.She is survived by her husband,Dr.W.C. NANKIPOO--Mr.Franklin McKNIGHT and children,Marguerite and Franklin were called to Collierville Thursday by the death of their grandmother,Mrs.BALDWIN. They were accompanied by Mr.Bob McKNIGHT and Mr.Bence CATES. GATES--Mr.W.H. POINDEXTER died Wednesday of last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs.G.T. HALLIBURTON.Funeral services were conducted at Concord Thursday morning by Rev. YOUNG, for the citizenship of the entire county feels that they have sustained an irreparable loss. For almost half a century, Judge YOUNG had been identified with our people,holding some of the most important positions of honor and trust within their power to bestow,the greatest perhaps,being that of County Judge of Lauderdale County,which he had held almost continuously since the creation of this office many years ago.During the brief interim in which he was not laboring in this capacity,he was serving the City of Ripley as Mayor,resigning this position when again called upon to accept the county judgeship,which he retained until his death. Judge YOUNG,who was in his 72nd year,was a son of the late Dr. & Mrs.A.H. YOUNG,one of Lauderdale's oldest,most influential and esteemed families. He was born in Durhamville and moved with his parents to Ripley when a mere youth.He attended Bingham College,North Carolina,and later the University of Tennessee and the University of Virginia; receiving his degree from the latter institution.Returning to Ripley he studied law in the office of Steele & Steele. Judge YOUNG passed away Monday morning in the Baptist Hospital,Memphis.The remains were brought to the funeral home on Monday afternoon and prepared for burial.Services were held in the Baptist Church Tuesday at 4 p.m. He is survived by his wife; two sons,Bryan YOUNG and Edward YOUNG,both of Toledo,Ohio; one brother, Prof. Stewart YOUNG,teacher in Culver Military Academy, Culver,Ind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ FRIDAY JUNE 10, 1932 HALLS,TENN.JUNE 6th--J.A. SIMMONS ,72 , died suddenly at his home near Gates Friday night after suffering a stroke.He was born in Logan County,Ky.,Feb.12th,1860,and moved to Lauderdale when six years of age.He was twice married. His first wife was before her marriage,Miss Bettie KIRKSEY. To the union six children were born,five of whom survive, Mrs.F.R. DICKENS,of Ann Arbor,Mich., R.H. SIMMONS of Brownsville, Mrs.W.B. Interment in Gates Cemetery. LOCALS--Louis Eugene,two-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs.G.W. POTTER,of Arp,died Sunday and the remains were laid to rest in Mt.Pleasant Cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ FRIDAY JUNE 17, 1932 FLIPPEN--On May 31st,little Alton Warren COLVIN, 19-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs. Decatur COLVIN died at the Baptist Hospital,Memphis.The following day funeral services were conducted at the family residence here,after which interment was in Poplar Grove Cemetery.He was a loveable child and the bereaved parents have the sympathy of the entire community. WHITEFIELD--Mr.& Mrs.J.R. LATHAM, Miss LATHAM, Mrs.G.H. LATHAM and Mrs.Troy SAVAGE were called to Providence Sunday to attend the funeral of Mrs.Robert W, WALLACE. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ FRIDAY JUNE 24, 1932 LIGHTFOOT--Mr.& Mrs.R.M. JOHNSON and Mr.& Mrs.O.B.AKIN attended the funeral of Mrs.Josie DUVALL at New Hope Friday. MARY'S CHAPEL--The remains of Mr. C.M. FERGUSON were brought here Sunday from Memphis for interment. WOODVILLE--Mrs.Levi CLARK attended the funeral of her aunt,Mrs.Josie DUVALL at New Hope Friday. CONNER--Mr.Henry RUSSELL died suddenly on June 17th,and was buried the following day at Mary's Chapel. DEATH--Anjentta Josephine,daughter of the late Francis Marion and Elijah AKIN was born February 7th,1852 in Middle Tennessee and died June 16,1932 at her home in Ripley.When a small child,she moved with her parents to Lauderdale County.She was married on December 27th,1874 to Benjamin Franklin DUVALL and to this union were born nine children,five of whom; two girls and three sons and her husband preceded her in death. When quite young she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her saviour.Those who knew her best know that her faith was unwavering.For years Mrs.DUVALL's membership was with New Hope Methodist Church and though she could not attend regularly,her pleasure was in accociation with church people.She was always cheerful,looked on the bright side,and was able to see the good rather than the bad..She was a devoted mother and sister and to her friends she was loyal and true. Four children,Mack DUVALL, Garland DUVALL, Guy DUVALL and Jack DUVALL; one sister, Mrs.Lee RAINEY; one brother, Mr.Chas.AKIN; and a host of other relatives and friends mourn her departure. Funeral services were conducted Friday morning by Rev.Howell TAYLOR of the local Methodist church,assisted by Elder H.I. COPELAND and Rev.Smith RICHARDSON at New Hope church. LOCALS--The death of Mr. Postell REECE,which occurred in the Brownsville Hospital Tuesday morning was a great shock to the many friends of this young man.The cause of his death made his passing all the more heart rending,resulting from a hit on the left temple while playing baseball Saturday afternoon at Mascedonia.After the injury,he continued playing for several innings,when he was stricken and never regained consciousness.He was the only son of Mr.& Mrs.M.J. GITCHELL and children attended the funeral of Mr.Luther CHILDREDD at Grace Tuesday of last week. BEXAR--Mr.& Mrs. W.D. GITCHELL and children were called to Ripley last Thursday by the death of their little granddaughter,Peggy Gene KOONCE. BEXAR--Mr.& Mrs.Levi KOONCE and children,Misses Frances and Elsie LYELL,Christine SORRELL and Crystal LANGLEY attended the funeral of little Peggy KOONCE at Grace Friday. HENNING--Mrs.Virginia Crook SCOTT, wife of J.B. SCOTT,of the Rialto vicinity died at midnight Sunday,June 19th,after a very brief illness.Funeral services were held at the residence at 3 p.m. Tuesday by Rev.E.W. MAXEDON of the Henning M.E. CHURCH,of which she was a member.Interment was in Munford Cemetery at Covington.Mrs.SCOTT was a daughter of A.H. POSTELL REECE--Postell Reece,oldest child of Mr.& Mrs.M.J. REECE,was born November 20,1914,died June 19,1932 at the Brownsville Hospital.He was injured June 19,while playing ball which caused his death.When a small child,Postell began attending Sunday school each Sunday with his parents,and he was always there unless illness prevented.In August 1931,he professed faith in Christ and joined Mascedonia Baptist Church and lived a faithful member until the end. SMITH in Moline,Ill. She spent her early girlhood in Ripley and at the age of 17 years was married to Mr.Wm. H. HOLLOWAY,who preceded her in death 45 years ago.After the death of her husband she moved her family to Colorado Springs,Colo.,in 1903.In recent years living in Moline,Ill. She is survived by children; Mrs.Eddie Sue O'GORMAN of Kansas City,Mo., Mrs.Tessa SMITH and Mrs.Jennie HOLLOWAY of Moline,Ill.,Mrs.Laura ELLIS,of Lakeland,Fla.,Mrs.Helen WINSTON and Mrs.Frances PIERRON,of Colorado Springs, Mrs.Irvie LINK,of Denver,Colo.; also a sister,Mrs.Thomas STEELE,Sr.,who is now the only surviving member of the family of Dr.J.N. WARDLAW.Illness prevented the sister from attending the funeral in Moline Tuesday afternoon. GATES--Mr.John CHILDRESS, age 76, died Saturday night at the home of his daughter-in-law,Mrs. Pearl CHILDRESS.He was a consistant member of the Methodist church for 40 years.Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. C.C. LEWIS,after which his remains were laid to rest in Concord Cemetery.He is survived by one daughter, Mrs.Harry THURMOND and ten grandchildren. IN MEMORY OF OUR MOTHER--On Tuesday 5th at 4 p.m.,the death angel came into our midst and claimed for its own,our darling mother,Mrs.Balinda (nee RUS) THOMPSON.She was sick four weeks with flu and pneumonia.Though suffering intensely she bore all with the fortitude of an angel,and when asked how she felt,she would always answer with a smile,"just fine." It was hard to give her up and as time goes on it seems unbearable. She was born December 2nd,1848 at Hurricane Hill; on July 13th,1870,she was married to L.O. THOMPSON.To this union eight children were born,five of whom survive.She was left a widow at the age of 50, and was never willing to leave the old home and there she was when the end came.She leaves five heartbroken children; grandchildren; and one sister,Mrs.Mattie MULLIKIN to mourn her death.Funeral services at Mt.Pleasant Church,burial in church cemetery. LOCALS--Mr.W.H. HUGHES, 60, died at his home near Ripley of a heart attack.The funeral was conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Grace Church.He is survived by his wife and six children. IN MEMORY--In sad and loving memory of our dear baby,little Dailey C. AMMONS, son of Mr.& Mrs.R.S.AMMONS,born January 5th,1932 and departed this life July 4th,1932 at 2:45 p.m. After ten days of suffering between life and death,the great God above in His tender mercy saw fit to call him home.There is not doubt but that kind hearts and loving hands did all in their power to save the little one.He leaves behind father; mother; two brothers,Daughten AMMONS and Sanford AMMONS Jr.;one little sister,Nadine AMMONS;and a host of relatives.(a Poem).Signed:W.C. NANKIPOO--Mr.John DAVIS,who had been confined to his bed for quite awhile,died Wednesday of last week.Funeral services were held Thursday at Enon Church bt Rev.Taylor,of Halls,and Rev.Bennett,of Curve.Interment was in Enon Cemetery.He is survived by a wlfe and three children. KILLED BY DAUGHTER'S SUITOR--Because Sam TURNER, 47, residing in the Conner community,east of Ripley,objected to Marks HIGHTOWER,19, going with his daughter,Margaret, 16, the two men became involved in a fight in the road near the Frank HOLCOMB home Sunday afternoon.Gus SPILLER and Aaron KIRBY, neighbors,separated them.TURNER,it is said returned to his home and according to a statement by HIGHTOWER,procured a shotgun and came to the home of Frank HOLCOMB where HIGHTOWER had stopped,approaching from the rear of the house and opening fire,discharging five loads at HIGHTOWER,one peppering his arm and one taking effect in the right foot.He is not seriously injured. After TURNER had emptied the gun of five charges,HIGHTOWER wrenched the gun from his assailant,striking TURNER on the back of the head,breaking his neck, producing almost instant death. HIGHTOWER was brought to Ripley by Sheriff J.T. COUGHLAN;Deputies C.A. BORDERS and Blake ACUFF and placed in jail. At the hearing Tuesday before Justice F.A. HENRY, HIGHTOWER was released.J.E. STEWART, J.E. LEMON died Wednesday at her home near Arp. Funeral services were conducted by Rev.C.A. COLEMAN at asbury at 10 o'clock yesterday,and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.She was the sister of Prof. G.C. McLEOD and Mr.J.D. McLEOD,both of Ripley; Mrs.T.D. BARNES and Mrs.J.L. NELSON,both of Lightfoot, Mrs.John LINDSEY and Mrs.MASON,of Covington. **************************************************************************** DROWNED--The death by drowning of J.T. COUGHLAN,Jr.,14-year-old son of Sheriff and Mrs.J.T. COUGHLAN, which occurred in KLUTTS pond Sunday morning about 10 o'clock,brought sadness to the entire community and hearts went out to the grief-stricken parents. In the company of four other boys,he had gone to the pond to enjoy an outing.It is said he had been in the water quite a while when the tragedy took place.his playmates were unable to save him and he sank in about seven feet of water.After the alarm was given,it was with some difficulty that the body was located by rescurers who hurried to the scene.Two physicians worked faithfully to resuscitate him.The playmates with him were Clyde CHALK, Lynn CROOK, Leon WATSON and Homer JAMISON.Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock,the remains laid to rest in Maplewood.The pallbearers were his playmates: Jack HUTCHESON, Henry HUNGATE, Homer JAMISON, Jack CURRIE, Clyde CHALK, Lynn CROOK, Edward CRAIG and Ed ROBERSON. Thirty-one years ago last May,two of Ripley's promising youths,John ROBERSON,son of Mr.& Mrs.W.M. ROBERSON; and George PALMER,son of Mr.& Mrs.J.E. PALMER; were drowned in this same pond. CEDAR GROVE--Mrs.GARDNER,who had been confined to her bed for several months,died Monday and was buried the following day at Asbury. IN MEMORY--In loving memory of our dear husband and father,W.R. HUGHES,born July 4th,1870 and departed this life at 11:30 p.m. July 2,1932.After being confined to his bed for 13 days,the Great God above in His tender mercy,saw fit to call him home.He leaves behind a wife; four sons,Rev.W.E. HUGHES, Rev. W.H. HUGHES, Vernon HUGHES and Edward HUGHES; two daughters,Mrs.W.S. CHIPMAN and Mrs.Clifford WYLIE; one brother and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his death. Mrs.W.R. HUGHES & Family. DEATH--Mrs.Mattie WATKINS,mother of our friend and fellow townsmen,Hon.J.W. WATKINS,died at her home near Alamo,Thursday of last week at the age of a little more than 88 years. She was the daughter of the late Dr.G.S. SCARBROUGH,one of the leading physicians of his day.Dr.SCARBOROUGH died in 1883. Mrs.WATKINS is survived by three sons; four daughters; and several grandchildren and great-grand children.At the funeral last Friday at Pond Creek Methodist Church,six of her grandsons served as pallbearers.The services were conducted by her pastor,Rev.W.F. PAFFORD,assisted by Rev.J.C.W. NUNN and Rev.P.A. RUSH died Monday at her home in the Hurricane Hill community.She was a most estimable Christian lady and is survived by her husban and five children. In the death of Mrs.Sarah S. CARSON,which occurred at her home in Ripley July 20th,1907,another name has been stricken from the ever-lessening roll of our older settlers,and the aged husband,who had shared her companionship for 40 years and two sons and three daughters are left to attest how sadly they will miss her.Funeral services conducted by Rev.LONG,were held at the family residence Sunday afternoon at 4:30,and the remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. Mrs,Mary Fletcher WALKER,wife of Mr.Benjamin D. WALKER,died at her home in Ripley July 20th,and her remains were laid to rest in St.Paul's cemetery near her old home in Durhamville,Sunday afternoon at 5 o' clock.Deceased moved with her parents from South Carolina to Tennessee in 1847.She was a daughter of Wm.A. & Harriet MOORER.She was married May 12th,1858 and to this union six children were born,four of whom survive: Mrs.C.M. CURVE--Afteran illness of about six weeks,Mrs.J.L. FELTY died Wednesday night of last week and was buried the following day at Woodville,Rev.M.F. SAVAGE conducting the services. Mrs.FELTY moved here from Kentucky about five years ago and had made many friends here. She leaves her husband and three daughters, Mrs.Verda SIMS, Misses Ruby and Kathleen FELTY and one son,Emmett FELTY,all of this place to mourn her passing. DEATH; RIDGELY,TENN.,JULY 20--Funeral services for Mrs.Mary Ann NEEL, 79, who died at the home of her daughter near Martin,were conducted by Rev.HOWELL yesterday from the Methodist Church of Ripley in charge,assisted by Rev.RAMSEY of Ridgely Baptist Church. Mrs.NEEL was born in Obion County.At the time of her death,she was a member of the first Methodist Church,Dyersburg.She was married to the late W.A. NEEL December 16th,1880,and moved to Ridgely where they resided until his death several years ago. Mrs.NEEL was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star of this ciity. Surviving are a daughter,Mrs.C.W. McINTYRE,of Martin; four sons,O.C. NEEL of Artesia,N.M., E.A.NEEL,of Manilla,Ark.,R.A. NEEL of Armorel,Ark.,and C.H. NEEL,of Ripley,Tenn.;one sister,Mrs.G.W. BARNES,of Missouri;and eight grandchildren. Interment was in the Ridgely Cem. LOCALS--Bettie Lou,two-months-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.M.L. WOODS died at Gold Dust Sunday and was buried at Arp Monday. LOCALS--Relatives here were advised Saturday of the sudden death of Mr. L.L. ELGIN at his home in Tulsa,Okla.The funeral was held Monday and his remains laid to rest in that city.He married Miss Alice GRAY,of Ripley,and is survived by his wife and one daughter. LOCALS--Mr. Roland HEATHCOTT died Tuesday in the General Hospital in Memphis,and the remains were interred in Concord cemetery Thursday morning.Mr.HEATHCOTT lived here prior to moving to Memphis several years ago.He was 39 years of age and is survived by a wife and several children. A TRAGIC DEATH--Miss Myrtle GOAD, 16, was killed Saturday night about 9 o'clock,when the horse she was riding was struck by a Nash sedan driven by J.E. STAFFORD,of Memphis,as the animal entered the Jefferson Davis highway from a narrow road leading from the GOAD residence,one mile south of Ripley.Mrs.STAFFORD and her mother, Mrs.G.W. NEWTON,of Hickman,Ky were injured in the wreck. The party which included Miss Maude CARTER,of Memphis and Harry NEWTON,a nephew of Mrs.NEWTON,was enroute to Hickman from Memphis.The accident was unavoidable,according to Wallace McCLEISH,traffic officer and deputy sheriff.Mr.STAFFORD and family live on Hale Avenue,Memphis and he is a traveling salesman for Ellis-Jones Drug Co. The body of Miss GOAD was carried to the office of Drs.LEWIS & NUNN,and after examination,she was found to be dead,and the body was then turned over to Burgess & Peters and prepared for burial.Funeral Services were held Sunday afternoon at Mt.Pleasant,conducted by Rev.Smith RICHARDSON,in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends.The tragic death of Miss GOAD made all Ripley sorrowful.She was a daughter of Mr.& Mrs.John GOAD. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FRIDAY JULY 29, 1932 DEATH--News was received here Tuesday of the death of Mr.W.B. SAPP, 73, which occurred at his home in Harlingen,Texas Monday.For many years Mr. SAPP resided in Ripley and was engaged in the hardware and implement business.He was a whole souled,genteel man,and held in high esteem by a large circle of relatives and friends in Lauderdale County.Two children,Mrs. R.R. MALOAN and William SAPP,of Harlingen survive. LOCALS--Delsey May ESRA,age three and one half months died Friday and laid to rest in Mary's Chapel cemetery Saturday. LOCALS--Mr.Sam BAKER died Sunday at the home of Mr.E.B. KISSELL at the Barr,and was buried at Walnut Grove Monday.He was 82 years of age. LOCALS--Mrs.W.H. CRIHFIELD died Wednesday afternoon at her home near Edith after several weeks illness.The funeral was held Thursday afternoon. DEATH--Mr.J.W. CURRIE,who died at Haywood Memorial Hospital on Wednesday,July 20th,was born October 28,1858 in Woodruff County,Ark.,and moved to Lauderdale County the same year.He married Miss Lula C.
