Allen Wood

My great-great grandfather, Allen Wood married Sarah Jane Netherton in Cocke Co TN on July 9, 1864. Allen served as a private in the 60th Reg CSA, TN Mounted Infantry, under Col John H Crawford. He was in Co I under Captain William A Walsh. This regiment was also referred to as the 79th.

Allen was born 9/7/1841 and died 2/25/1887 in Hunt Co TX. He enlisted in 1862 at age 21.

The 60th Reg Infantry was organized at Haynesville, TN in October 1862 and its members were from Washington, Hawkins, Sullivan, Grainger and Cocke counties. It was assigned to Gen JC Vaughn's Brigade and remained there throughout the war. Serving in the Dept of Mississippi and East Louisiana, most of the regiment was captured in the conflict at Big Black River Ridge with remaining men in Vicksburg. Exchanged and reorganized as mounted infantry, it skirmished in Western Virginia and East Tennessee, then disbanded during the spring of 1865. From the 1880 Federal Census, Precinct 3, Fannin Co TX, Allen is shown as age 38, born TN, Sarah (S J), age 37 b TN. Children listed: Osker, son age 13, Lana age 11, C (son) age 9, all born in TN. Younger children born in TX are EM (daughter) age 5, Tennessee (daughter) age 3, and Rufus (infant).
