{"id":212,"date":"2023-05-28T18:28:15","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T22:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tngenweb.org\/carter\/?p=212"},"modified":"2023-05-28T18:28:15","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T22:28:15","slug":"carter-county-military-pensioners-in-1835","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tngenweb.org\/carter\/carter-county-military-pensioners-in-1835\/","title":{"rendered":"Carter County Military Pensioners in 1835"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Compiled by Jackie &amp; Dawn Peters<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nSeveral acts have been passed by congress to award pensions to people that served in the Revolutionary War.&nbsp; The Act of 1818 only granted pensions base on the financial need of the applicant. &nbsp;Before this act, pensions were awarded based on the disability or death of a serviceman.&nbsp; There were so many applications under the act of 1818 that it was amended in 1820.&nbsp; The Act of 1820 required that every pensioner receiving payments under the act of 1818 must submit a certified schedule of his estate and income. This reduced the pension rolls by several thousand.<\/p>\n<p>In 1823 an act was passed that restored many of the pensions lost under the 1820 act.&nbsp; On 15 May 1828, another service-pension act was enacted.&nbsp; It granted full pay for life to surviving officers and enlisted men of the Revolutionary War who were eligible for benefits under the terms of a Continental Congress resolution of 15 May 1778.<\/p>\n<p>On 7 June 1832, a liberal pension act was passed that extended pensions to addition people.&nbsp; Every officer or enlisted man who had served at least two years in the Continental Line or State troops, volunteers or militia, were eligible for a pension of full pay for life.&nbsp; Naval and marine officers and enlisted men were also included.&nbsp; Veterans who had served less than the two years but longer than six months were eligible for a reduced pension.<\/p>\n<p>The following is a list of the men receiving this pension who resided in Carter County, Tennessee in 1835:<\/p>\n<p><b>Blalock, John<\/b> Lieut. in Virginia line $160 year &#8212; In 1832 age 72<\/p>\n<p><b>Ellis, Joseph<\/b> Pvt South Carolina Militia &amp; North Carolina line paid $1 10 and $20 year -In 1835 age 73<\/p>\n<p><b>Emmert, George<\/b> Pvt Virginia Contentinal Army &#8212; paid $ 1400 &#8212; and $96 per year- In 1820 age 87<\/p>\n<p><b>Garland, Humphrey<\/b> Pvt North Carolina line $96 year &#8211; In 1822 age 86<\/p>\n<p><b>Grant, David<\/b> Pvt North Carolina line paid $1170. and $96 year &#8211; In 1819 age 75<\/p>\n<p><b>Green, John<\/b> Pvt North Carolina line, $55 year &#8211; In 1835 age 71<\/p>\n<p><b>Haynes, George<\/b> Pvt Virginia Continental Army paid $308 and $96 year &#8212; In 1830 age 77<\/p>\n<p><b>Hendrix, Solomon<\/b> Pvt Virginia line paid $240 and $80 year &#8211; In 1832 age 79<\/p>\n<p><b>Hood, Jacob<\/b> Pvt Pennsylvania Continental Army paid $630 and $96 year &#8211; In 1825 age 90<\/p>\n<p><b>Humphreys, David<\/b> Pvt Pennsylvania Continental Army paid $376 and $96 year &#8211; In 1819 age 88<\/p>\n<p><b>Kelly, Richard<\/b> Pvt Virginia line paid $69.99 and $23 year &#8212; -In 1833 age 71<\/p>\n<p><b>McDonald, James<\/b> Pvt Armand&#8217;s Legion paid $1013. and $96 year- In 1824 was age 74<\/p>\n<p><b>Miller, John<\/b> Sgt Virginia Militia paid $77 year and $25 year &#8212; In 1833 age 73<\/p>\n<p><b>Overby, William<\/b> Pvt North Carolina paid $120 and $40 year &#8212; In 1833 age 73<\/p>\n<p><b>Scott, John<\/b> Pvt South Carolina line paid $240 and $80 year &#8212; In 1833 age 80<\/p>\n<p><b>Shields, John<\/b> Mariner U S Navy based in Pennsylvania $44 year &#8212;
