1860 Census Head of Households and Individuals with Different Surnames
This index of heads of households was compiled by Jackie and Dawn Trivette Peters, ©1997.
In 1860, Carter County included the area that became the eastern section of Unicoi County in 1875.
The listing contains the names of the heads of households and those who were enumerated in a household where the head had a different surname (indicated by an asterisk [*]). The list includes age and house number from the original census record.
Note that some ages may be transcribed incorrectly; a seven (7) may have been read as a nine (9), a three (3) as a five (5), etc. Always check the original!
Some of these names where difficult to translate. If you do not find a person in this index that you think should be there, please consult the original census records and draw your own conclusions. The census taker used no pattern or reason fo r the order in which he recorded the census. There were many errors. Angels were recorded as Angels, Rains were recorded as Range, both Humphreys and Umphreys are recorded, etc…
