1850 Census Head of Households and Individuals with Different Surnames
This index of heads of households was compiled by Lynn Brown and Jackie and Dawn Trivette Peters, ©1997.
The 1850 census is the first census that listed each non-enslaved member of a household by name and age. In 1850, Carter County included the area that became the eastern section of Unicoi County in 1875.
The listing contains the names of the heads of households and those who were enumerated in a household where the head had a different surname (indicated by an asterisk [*]). The list includes age and page number from the original census record.
Some of these names were difficult to translate. If you do not find a person in this index that you think should be there, we suggest you consult the original census records and draw your own conclusions. Also, please take special care in how you look up a name. Lewis may be spelled Luis, Forbes as Farbus, Lacy as Lasy, Naves as Knaves, etc.
