Chumlea, who was appointed Clerk & Master of the Chancery court the first of the week, was born in Knox County in 1845. He came to this county, July 1875. For three years after he came to Blount he clerked in the store of H.L. Bradley, which stood where A.K. Harpers now stands. In August 1878 he was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court and he served the people so faithfully and well during his first term that he was elected to this since the second and third time, serving in all twelve years. During four years of the time that he was Circuit Court Clerk he served as Justice of the Peace, and the last three years he served as Deputy Clerk and Master. Oct. 21, 1890, he was appointed Clerk and Master by Judge Gibson and has served six years in this office and his reappointment for another six years is certainly a high compliment to his efficiency. If Mr. Chumlea lives to serve out his present term he will have served Blount County in official capacity a total of twenty-four years and he will be 57 years old. This is certainly a long and honorable record, a record of which any might feel proud.

Source: Maryville Times Newspaper.
