No previous military service, prior to enlistment. Enlisted at Franklin, TN, June 18th, 1917, in Battery F, First Tennessee Field Artillery, which afterwards became 114th Field Artillery, of the 30th Division.

Rank on entering service: Private, promoted June 1st, 1918 to Private First Class. No honors or citations.

Trained at Rendezveus Camp, Columbia, TN, July 24 to September 9, 1917; at Camp Sevier, SC Sept 11, 1917 to May 21, 1918; at Camp Mills, NY to May 26th, 1918, landed in England June 6, 1918, in France in June.

No transfers.

Battles engaged in: Defense Toul Sector, August 28 to Sept. 12, 1918; St. Mihiel Offensive Sept. 12 to Sept. 15, 1918; Defense Argonne Woods, Avacourt Sector, Sept. 22 to Sept. 26, 1918; Argonne-Meuse Offensive Sept 26 to Oct. 5, 1918, upon which later date he was killed in action; same being near Montfaucon; he was buried Oct. 5, 1918 in American Burying Ground, at Southern Edge Bois Chehemin, (09, 5-75, 1 Verdun A Map) in Grave No. 13; remains disinterred and reburied in Grave 85, section 50, Plot 2, in Argonne American Cemetery No. 1232, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon. Remains disinterred and reburied in family lot in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Franklin, TN, August 15, 1921, with full military honors.
