5661 - 1840 May 7 - (I.B.) Thomas C. SHEPHERD Against Jones W. LOCK both of Wilson Co., TN. Orator says in the year 1836, orator and LOCK entered into partnership of two boat loads of corn which they intended for the southern market. He agreed to funish the money and orator the labor and trouble of buying, transporting and selling. The defdt. kept the article of part- nership and after the enterprise proved unfortunate he refused to produce the paper.

COMMINGS of Davidson Co., TN and Stith HARRISON of Gibson Co., TN and Wm. R.D. PHIPPS of MS. Orator says that some 16 or 18 years since his father John SMITH departed this life in this county leaving considerable estate and a number of children. Wm. R.D. 5664 - 1843 July 29 - (Bill) Thomas J. SNEED of DeCalb Co., exor. of William SNEED, dec'd. Against Elias P. HUBBARD of Wilson Co., TN surviving admr. of John A. SNEED, dec'd. and of Elijah C. JENNINGS of Wilson Co., TN admr. of Susan B. SNEED, dec'd.... William SNEED died in 1838 testate. That himself together with his brother John A. SNEED was apt'd. exor. in the estate of William. Before estate wound up, John A. SNEED died in 1841 intestate and Elias P. HUBBARD and Susan B. SNEED admrs. of his estate and before they had completed the administration Susan B. SNEED died intestate and Elijah C. JENNINGS took out letters of admr. John A. was indebted to William SNEED.... Susan left one infant child which has since died and your orator has taken out letters of admr. on the estate of the infant child.... Infant is entitled to 2/3 of the estate of John A. SNEED, dec'd.

5669 - 1847 Jan. 25 - (O.B.) Harris H. SIMMONS, admr. of William P. MARTIN, dec'd. of Wilson Co., TN Against Lindsey MARTIN and Wesley MARTIN of Wilson Co., TN. The intestate died in Wilson Co., TN about the last of March 1845. Sept. 1846 the orator apt'd. admr. joint liability with John J. MARTIN and James W. BOND to Alexander SIMMONS. BOND left the state. Lindsey MARTIN is father of William P. and William P. died at the house of Lindsey. William P. had purchased land from Randel GRISHAM and a negro girl from Clabaur JARRETT.... 5670 - 1849 Jan. Term - (Sale of slaves) Petitioner John C. TIPPETT shows that Parmelia HEATH Jur. died in Wilson Co., TN about 10 years ago intestate and he qualified as admr. Parmelia HEATH by the will of her father Harry HEATH who died some short time before the death of his death was entitled to a negro man named Peter, at the death of her mother Parmelia HEATH.... The will produced at court ... life estate in boy Peter was given to her mother with a vested interest in remainder to your petitioner's intestate. Parmelia HEATH, Senr. died Oct. last. Petitioner's intestate died while she was a single woman leaving at her death 3 sisters ... her sister Martha HALL died leaving one child James. W. HALL. Other sisters, Frances S. WYNN and Catherine D. LINDSEY.

She married Abraham in this county March 1808 and lived together until about two years ago. Defdt. on 8 Mar. 1846 abandoned her and in company with one Eliza ESCUE a young unmarried lady living in the neighborhood ... went to KY. Complt. lives Civil District 2 ... owner of 274a, one negro Billy. She has two children living, the issue of her marriage with defdt., Milton TAYLOR and his brother Patterson TAYLOR.

5674 - 1844 Jan. - (Bill) John, Andrew, Charity and child Cina and Isaac by their next friend Jo C. GUILD Against John G. GRAVES, Zedekiah TATE, Sally WARD, John WEAVER, John ROACH, James WALDEN and Isaac BAKER. Complt. shows that their former master Ignatius JONES died in 1824 and in consideration of the services of the complts. who were capable of doing services and in consequence of his above named slaves - he made and executed his will which he signed and sealed on 4 July 1824 ... subscribing witnesses Hugh TILFORD and William MURRY. Probated Sept. Term 1824. He gave complt. John to serve Elenor TATE 30 years from the date of said will which expired on 4 July. John was to be free from bondage as a slave and set at liberty. Complt. Andrew by said will was deeded to serve Rachel JONES 20 years from date of will and set a liberty. Complt. Isaac by will was deeded to serve Rachel JONES 21 years from date of will and then set free. Complt. Charity by will deeded 15 years his wife Winiford JONES if she should so long live if not the 15 years to serve said Eleanor TATE and then set free at the period of 31 years. Complt. Cina is a child of Charity. John G. GRAVES and Zedekiah TATE by will was appointed exors. of testator. Zedekiah married Eleanor JONES Zedekiah sold him to one Albert WARD and after his death Mrs. Sally WARD of Davidson Co., TN. Complt. Zedekiah gave Charity to his daughter Rachael WALDEN who married James WALDEN who holds her in the county of Rutherford and she has served over 5 years over the time she was to serve. She asks for $50. per year. Complt. Isaac shows Zedekiah sold and now resides in Henderson Co. in W. TN and John BAKER of Wilson Co., TN became purchaser. Complt. Andrew shows that Zedekiah TATE had two children James TATE and Rachel WALDEN and James died and his admr. sold Andrew to John ROACH of Wilson Co., TN....
1824 July 4 - Will of Ignotiscius JONES of Wilson Co., TN. "To wife the land, to Charity and Isaac, stock. To Eleanor TATE the part of land she lives on.... Boy John to serve her 20 years from this date and then free. I give her Boston to serve her until he is 30 years of age and then free.... To Rachel JONES horse, saddle, bed, cow, calf, profits of 40a where MORGAN now lives ... one boy Andrew to serve her 20 years from this date and then set free. Also boy Isaac to serve her 21 years from this date and set free though she is not to have him until her mother's death and land after wife's death. Negro woman Charity to serve 15 years from this date and then free.... If any children they will serve to age 31. Negro Sarah I set free. Grandson Richard TATE...." [Decree not in this file.]
1845 Jan. 7 - Answer of Orron D. WEAVER of Shelby Co., W. TN says John was given to Eleanor and Zed near time of their marriage and perhaps before. - Answer of Zedekiah TATE of Henderson Co., TN. Eleanor was the only living heir when division took place. He married Eleanor in Jan. 1818. Rachael TATE having died, Andrew became property of Rachel, wife of James WALDEN and James TATE and was sold by their gdn. Lewis WRIGHT to John ROACH. Cina is 19 years old and in her 20th year since March last ... has been vested in Yada W. TATE for her life, remainder to Y.Z. Ann TATE, Florida D. TATE, Martha W. TATE, Calpurnia Cicus TATE, Jerome Bonaparte TATE (5 last minors). - Answer of John BAKER of Wilson Co., TN and James WALDEN of Rutherford Co. 1845 Feb. - Dep. of William MURRY, about 83, and Permelia MURRY about 70. MURRY supposes JONES to have been 60 years old at his death. - Dep. of Elizabeth ROACH, Samuel C. MCWHERTER and Margaret C. CURRY. Wade BAKER agent takes deps. for his father John E. BAKER. - Dep. of Elizabeth ROACH, about 37. Margaret C. CURRY, about 53. Samuel C. MCWHER, M.D., about 50.
1845 Mar. - Dep. of Thomas KIRKPATRICK, about 50. John G. GRAVES, about 65 wrote the will of Ignatius JONES. Lewis WRIGHT apt'd. gdn. of children. - Question by pltf.: How was my mother Sarah, managed after the death of Ignatious JONES? Answer: She was set at liberty as being free.... Will written 4 July 1824.
1845 June - Dep. of Peggy HAMILTON, 65. William HARDY, 60. - Dep. of Thomas TILFORD, 50 says JONES brought the negroes from Virginia. Z. TATE lived the first year after he married in Oct. - Dep. of John ROACH, Sr., about 70 [not the John ROACH who bough Andrew]. - Dep. of Wiley MCDEERMON, about 60, known JONES and TATE about 30 years. - Dep. of James TATE about 22. - Dep. of Polly JONES, about 55, says, "The oldest came with me from VA. Charity, John, and Andrew, who is dead was born in VA, the balance born in TN. I have known the negroes John and others ever since they were born. My husband worked with Ignatious the week before I was sent to see him. He did not live but a very few days. I stayed until he died." - Dep. of Elizabeth JONES, about 55. - Dep. of Rutherford RUTLAND, about 55, says JONES was a blacksmith, the oldest negroe woman, Aunt Salley, had the management of the farm. - Dep. of Parthenia COTHORN, about 56.
1845 Sept. 25 - Dep. of Benjamin GRAVES knew Ignatious JONES from year 1815 up to his death and were neighbors. TATE was a blacksmith and the boy John was engaged at the shop as a stricker. - Deps. of Brittain DRAKE, Robert MCFARLAND, Archibald CLAY, Dr. Thomas NORMAN knows character of Cherry O'NEAL.

5680 - 1842 May 5 - (I. Div. B.) Zana W. TATE by her father and next friend Jessie NANT of Wilson Co., TN Against Zedekiah TTE of MS. She married on 25 Nov. 1828 Wilson Co., TN.... Everything was fine until birth of 5th and last child. At time of marriage he had with him 3 children by a former marriage. She raised them until one died and others married. He was frequently absent. On 12 Oct. 1837 defdt. took trip to South and was gone about 2 months and on the 9th day June 1838 after his return the last child was born. Her father helped her. Negro man Osborn ... girl Sina ... boy Ben ... his son-in-law James WALDEN. Zana had lost a child previous to birth of last child. His son James TATE.... The land belongs by dissent to the wife of WALDEN and to James TATE.

1890 Mar. 12 - Dep. of Boss JACKSON. He lived with John S. BROWN in 1879 about 5 years. Says Aunt Margaret BROWN looked after household. He was 18 when he went there, his brother R.J. JACKSON was 19 or 20. Margaret BROWN was niece of J.S. BROWN. She was our aunt and he was a great uncle. Huse and Miss Mag BROWN lived there. He is a half uncle of hers. My wife died and I went there. Houston BROWN and John S. BROWN are half brothers. He employed Mr. Billy BROWN, uncle Huey BROWN and Bell ROBERTSON....

5729 - 1848 July 31 - (O.B.) John H. BROWN, Jr. of Wilson Co., TN Against Dabney TATUM and William A. BROWN of Wilson Co., TN, Sarah BROWN non resident. Orator in 1840 bought land of Samuel COB. Part of money was his wife's. Some two years later he found out the deed was made out to Dabney TATUM for the use of his then wife Sarah BROWN for her life then her children. Informed by George BROWN.... Some 6 years ago his wife ran off with John CAMPBELL. She is in Cincinnati. At the time she ran away they had one child, William A. BROWN, the defdt. MCMILLAN, composing the firm of CANTRELL & MCMILLAN, Roxie Baker SMITH and husband Verna SMITH, all citizens of Wilson Co., TN, except SMITH and wife who are residents of Rutherford Co., TN. VS Lee BAKER, resident of Wilson Co., TN, defdt. Wade BAKER, Jr. died in Wilson Co. 189_, intestate ... widow Roxie BAKER.... BAKER was the owner of a 1/3 interest in two or three tracts of land in Civil District 25 of Wilson Co., TN ... over 800a ... his mother Mrs. Bettie BAKER, dec'd.... Roxie now married to Complt. SMITH.... Lee BAKER only heir to all the BAKER lands. Wade BAKER, Sen.'s property descended to his three sons Wade Jr., Lee, and John E. BAKER. John E. died and left Lee and Wade Jr. his only heirs.
1901 Nov. 14 - Dep. of Lee BAKER says he was the only one named directly in the deed ... "My brothers Jno. E. and Wade were born after the deed was made and were living at my father's death. I had a brother and sister who died before my father without issue. My sister was named Stella, 5 years old and my brother was named Earl, and he was 16, I think. My father either got this 39a tract from CURRY heirs and the State of TN, or his father, my grandfather got it from the above named parties." After his father's death the land was cultivated by MEDGEPATH and a negro named SHANNON... His father never had a deed to the 70a, John BLAND died a few days after the trade... HUDDLESTON & ROBERTSON bought the 70a. W.R. DOBSON admr. of the BLAND heirs... Stella died in '75, Earle in '82, John E. in '97, Wade in '99, none left descendants, father died in '93.
1903 Feb. 24 - Dep. of Mrs. J.W. BOYD says Wade Sr. died in 1893. Her son-in-law got killed the first day of May '99. Elizabeth BAKER died the close of the year of '99, after the death of Wade. After Wade married her dau. they lived at the BAKER homeplace. They were married in Jan. '99. /S/ M.A. BOYD. 1903 Mar. 4 - Dep. of D.M. BANISTER, 55, lives Davidson Co., farmer. He lives about a mile from the Wade BAKER farm in Wilson Co., TN. He had lived at the BAKERS. - Dep. of J.W. BOYD, admr. who was appointed in May '99. Attorney, CANTRELL is dec'd. His dau. married Wade BAKER in Jan. and he was killed the first day of May. She had taught school in the neighborhood before they were married.

[This 23 page dep. of James HAMILTON has the first 2 pages missing.] CHERRY'S grandfather is I.F. DAVIS. Says he thought Eli CHERRY was supposed to advance all the money. HAMILTON wrote the deeds ... speaks of the 210a and 140a ... "I had a mortgage on the tract known as the CHERRY tract, in Davidson Co. Wm. JACKSON gave me the mortgage, he was a son of complt. Martha A. & Defdt. Edmond JACKSON. Wm. JACKSON inherited it by being half brother of Eli CHERRY.... Martha A. JACKSON'S father was Mr. DAVIS ... grandson, Wm. JACKSON. Wm. A. JACKSON died before the redemption of the CHERRY land, a year or two.... Abram JACKSON was uncle of W.H. JACKSON. I always understood that I.F.
