Founded 1970
The Wayne County Historical Society was founded in 1970 by a group of individuals who
sought to preserve and record the history of the county and its people. The Society has
met on a quarterly basis since its beginning and the meetings have generally had programs
designed around a specific topic relating to the history, genealogy, folklore and
archaeology of the county.
The Society began publication of a quarterly journal "The Wayne County
Historian" in March of 1988. The "Historian" is mailed free to all members
of the Society and to permanent repositories: The Library of Congress, the Tennessee State
Library, the Wayne County Public Library and to each of the three high school libraries in
the county. The Society also maintains an exchange program with several other societies
and organizations throughout the United States. These exchange journals are deposited in
the Wayne County Public Library as a permanent repository.
Membership in the Wayne County Historical Society is open to anyone interested in the history, genealogy, folklore and archaeology of Wayne County, Tennessee. Membership dues fall into two categories:
1. Individual Membership - $20.00 per year
