ALBERT FLOYD CEMETERY

Transcribed and submitted by Nelle J. BERRY

This cemetery is on Ross Creek, Wayne County, Tennessee about one mile from the Clifton Airport. It is a very old cemetery, overgrown, with all the markers and stones down. These family members were interred with love and care; many markers were sawed on three sides but left unengraved. Several were covered with large stones, and some with stone cairns.

The cemetery is on the W. G. HOWELL farm. Mr. HOWELL has the cemetery fenced off from the cattle and helped us dig and search for the markers. He also had his gates open so we could frive to the location.

Benham-Hughes-Speer Cemetery #13

GPS Coordinates: Lat: 35° 22¢ 15.2²N, Lon: 87° 58¢ 19²W

The Benham-Hughes-Speer cemetery is encompassed within the Ross Creek Landing golf course in Clifton, Tennessee. It can be accessed from Tom Holt Rd. or from the golf course club house. Travel west from Waynesboro, Tennessee on US-64 and turn right onto highway 114. Travel for 4.7 miles and turn right onto Tom Holt Rd. After traveling for about ¼ mile, look to your left and it is on the hill above the fairway and cart track. If one chooses to walk from Tom Holt Rd., respect the golfers, as there may be several in the immediate area. Also, there are snakes in the area.

An alternate route is to go to the club house, rent a cart and drive to the cemetery. Again, respect the folks playing on the greens. If one chooses to go this route, drive from Clifton on highway 128 for about one and one half miles and turn right onto Airport Rd. Turn right again and travel to the club house parking area.

There are several locations with limestone rocks that are probably markers for other graves. One area has what appears to have once been a pile of stones marking two graves. Those are level with the ground now. There are a few graves that have rocks stacked with no identification. The cemetery has stone columns and a rail type fence surrounding it. Enumerated by David Montgomery on 5 July 2010.

#187 Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery

A Primitive Baptist Church was located on Beech Creek about two miles above old Methodist Campground, and approximately one mile below Prater Branch, on the south side of the creek. In the 1850's and 1860's the church was moved from this location to Haynes Springs. On top of the hill above the old church location are seven or eight graves, marked with fieldstones with what appear to be some primitive markings. However, nothing could be deciphered. It has been said by older people in the community that these are graves of slaves.

Submitted by J. Erving and Ermadine Riley.

Dorothy Hoke lived in Clifton, Tennessee from 1977 or 1978 until her death.

"Two markers near the grave read: M.E.P. and C.P.P. On a foot stone C.P.P."

"C.P.P." denotes the markers for my father Claude Penrod Perry (he is the son of Dorothy Hoke's marriage to her second husband, Claude Roland Perry, who she divorced in 1937). The other denotes the marker for my mother, Mary Elizabeth Clanton. Both of my parents are alive and well currently in Chattahoochee, Fl where Mom works for the State of Florida as a Psychiatric Nurse and Dad is in retirement. - Claude P Perry II, 10 June 2008.)
