The history of the cemetery can be found on the pillars of the two gates to the cemetery. On the gate facing Urbana Road:
In Memory of George Washington Nelson who gave the original three acres for Urbana Cemetery 1856. Erected 1963 by Urbana Cemetery Association.
In Memory of Melvin Pyott Hall for his generous and lasting gift to Urbana Cemetery in memory of his parents, David F. & Ella Lucas Hall, 1951.

The gazebo sits on the foundation of the Old Urbana Methodist Church building. Urbana Methodist Church was founded in 1817 (which later became Limestone Methodist Church and moved from this location).
