 SPEEDWELL CEMETERY

Speedwell Cemetery photo
Located behind 3326 Cherokee Road (Hwy 67), Johnson City, TN.It is high on a hill on north side of highway. It was originally Speedwell Methodist Church Cemetery but the church has been gone for many years. This is a very old cemetery but well kept and there are many unmarked graves and just as many unlettered fieldstones. In 1997 money was collected and all the broken stones were repaired.

An early deed refers to the Speedwell Cemetery as the John Longmire family graveyard. Longmire lived there during 1820's-30's and members of his family are buried there with rock markers. With the construction of the Speedwell Methodist Church in 1855, the cemetery became known as the Speedwell Cemetery. Worley Mack Walters who owned the land around the graveyard, donated land to enlarge the cemetery. He inherited the farm from his father, William Washington Walters.
