OAKLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY

[EMMANUAL LUTHERN CHURCH] Located about two miles southwest of Cherokee Baptist Church off State Highway 81. It is between the headwaters of Booth Branch and the Loyd Branch, both tributaries of Cherokee Creek. GPS location: 36.15.31N 082,29.41W. Elevation-1683 ft. There are many unmarked graves, and many marked with plain unlettered fieldstone. The cemetery is overgrown with poison ivy but the April day (1998) I visited, the ground was covered with birds foot violets. The Washington County Deeds show the church to have been founded about 1805, so the cemetery probably dates from about that times. |
In a deed dated 6 Dec 1836, John Stromer sold the land to Stephen Brown but set aside "one quarter of an acre reserved for the Quaker Burial Ground as now used for that purpose." The Church building, which stood to the west of the cemetery, was sold to the Methodists 23 Feb 1897. This old building was torn down about 1924. There are four rows in the cemetery. Row 1 beginning at the west side of the south corner was used by the Cretselious family; Row 2 was used by the Keplinger family; Row 3 was used by the May family; and Row 4 was used by the Walters family. | |
