BOOTH (JOHN) CEMETERY

Located at 214 B. Chase Rd., Jonesborough, TN, about 300 yards from the road . It is directly behind the barn under a clump of trees. The Booth family homestead was located between the present Jerry Booth house and John Booth's grave.

Nancy Ann Yoakley m. Isaac Newton Boring. Isaac Newton Boring was son of Greenberry Boring, a soldier of the War of 1812. Greenberry married Mary Ruble a daughter of Peter Ruble.

Dr. Isaac Newton Boring was a doctor of the old school. Rarely has a man so fully enjoyed the confidence of a large community as a safe and valued physician as did Doctor Boring. He served the rural people well, practicing from his home located on the North bank of the Watauga river directly across from the Old Deer Lick school building. No "call the Doctor" went unanswered, be it day or night, summer or winter. For this service his compensation was little, and often gratis.

In addition to the manifest interest he proved he had in his community well being, from the family doctor point of view, he displayed an equal interest in their spiritual well being. It was the result of his direct efforts, and largely from his own funds, that Boring's Chapel was erected on ground he donated for that purpose.

Dr. Isaac Boroing married Nancy Ann Yoakley, May 24, 1844, daugher of Peter Yoakley. David Dyer witnessed the wedding in Sullivan Co. Nancy Ann Yoakley Boring was born October 31, 1827. She died March 14, 1898.

Children of Dr. Isaac Newton and Nancy Ann Boring:

(1) John Boring m. Lizzie White.

(2) Mary Boring m. J.K. Shipley (a school teacher in the "Fork" section for a number of years.

(3) Greenberry Boring removed to Stubenfield, Ohio, where he was married, lived, and died. He is buried in Stubenfield, Ohio.

(4) Peter Boring m. Mary Kitzmiller Devault (a daughter of Samuel and Nancy Kitzmiller Devault.)

BOSTIAN [GEORGE] CEMETERY

At the end of Hickory Springs Road SW (2135), walk up the logging road until it forks, take the left side. The road follows along a spring branch. At the next fork in the road, keep on the right side. Walk for about 11 minutes until you come to the top of the ridge and pass a fence. Turn left and continue the climb. After about 20 minutes of walking from Hickory Springs Rd, the cemetery is on the left. You can see the beginning of Buffalo Mountain at this spot. It is fenced with wire and has a wooden gate. There are large boxwood shrubs around the graves. The top of a large pine tree had fallen across the fence and broke off the left arm of a concrete cross. The two concrete vaults are about 24 inches high. George Bostian's vault is very wide. Ida Bostian's marker is made of bricks. Large barrels of bricks and sand are inside the fence. Two modern markers have been placed on top of the vaults.

BOWERS FAMILY CEMETERY

Located off the Boones Creek Rd. [Hwy. 354] Johnson City, TN, turn opposite mailbox 3030, in front of a new commercial building. The building does not have a number and the lane leading up to it does not have a name. The retaining walls are approximately 3 1/2 feet high. Well kept and landscaped. p. 75: The following stone was lying on a stump in Mr. Kirkpatrick's back yard and was badly broken. It had been brought from the old cemetery which was in the front yard of the house built by B.G. The Bowman-Range Cemetery is located in the 3rd Ward of Johnson City, Tennessee at the end of Young Street off Crescent Drive. According to the notes placed with the cemetery information filed at the Washington County/Jonesborough Library, 200 Sabin Drive, Jonesborough, Tennessee 37659, Billy Rowland, 219 Young Street, Johnson city, Tennessee said his father purchased the land from Mrs. Texie M. Allison. Mrs. Allison bought the land from John H. Bowman, and the cemetery site was excepted in the Deed. The Cemetery was copied on May 6, 1961 by Lena Hunt Henderson, L.W. and Mrs. L.W. McCown, 512 East Unaka Avenue, Johnson City, Tennessee.-J.L. Kiener)

There are many other graves in this cemetery. The graves are sunken and many of the graves have missing markers.

NOTES:

[The late] Mrs. L.W. McCown made notes for the Bowman-Range Cemetery from Bowman & Hoss data in her files. The material reads as follows: "The Peter Range (1792 - 1866) is Peter Range, Jr. son of Peter & Elizabeth Hieronousus Range, who lived on Knob Creek. Peter, Sr. died in 1817 ...(his) grave is marked with a rock and the rock has a date on it."

Matilda Range was Matilda Hale. A copy of their Bible record is contained in the files of Mr. L.W. McCown. Elinor Range was the daughter. She did not marry. Her grave is the most recent marked grave in this Cemetery off Young Street, 3rd Ward in Johnson City, Tennessee.

"Mary, mother of John H. Bowman (1777 - 1818), was the wife of Joseph Bowman (1784 - 1850)." Joseph Bowman was the son of the old Jacob Bowman & Susannah Millhouse Bowman, of Rockingham County, Virginia. The Bowmans migrated to Washington County, Tennessee early. Joseph Bowman was a preacher in the Brethren Church on Boones and Knob Creek. He may be buried in the Knob Creek Brethren Cemetery. Mary Bowman was Mary Hoss, daughter of Jacob Hoss & Mary Boon Hoss, The first of the Hoss name in Washington County, Tennessee. They settled in the eastern area of what is now Johnson City.

FOUR CHILDREN

Joseph and Mary Bowman had four children: (1) Susanna, born in 1807 married James Crouch on May 26, 1825; James was the son of Joseph & Margaret Sanford Crouch, of the Boones Creek area; (2) John H. who on July 4, 1837 married Salina J. Broyles in Washington County, Tennessee; (3) Elizabeth (born 1809) who married Henry Bashor on February 19, 1831 - Bashor was a Brethren, and (4) Jacob Bowman who died in infancy.

THE GRAVEYARD FIELD

One record states: Mary Hoss, born (c - circa) 1790 - which is in error and died about 1816 or 1819. (The tombstone gives 9-15-1777 - 2-29-1919) Mary Hoss is buried on their farm called "The Graveyard Field." In 1806, she married Joseph Bowman (1784 - 1850). Bowman was a Deacon in the a Church of the Brethren, and son of old Jacob Bowman of Rockingham County, Virginia & Susannah Millhouse bowman. Susannah married a second time after the death of Jacob to Isaac Hammer, also a Minister of the Church of the Brethren. After the death of Mary Hoss Bowman, Joseph Bowman married a second time in Virginia to Christian Beahm. The marriage took place in 1819. This couple was the parents of six children: (1) Daniel, (2) David, (3) Joseph, (4) Catherine, (5) Mary, and (6) Sarah Bowman.

MISSING CONNECTION

I have not yet unraveled the connection between Peter & Matilda Hale Range, Jr. and the Bowmans. I do know that Wm. T. Range, son of Peter Range, Jr. & Matilda H. Range lived on an adjoining farm to the John H. Bowman farm. Could this site have been part of the Jacob Hoss, father of Mary Hoss Bowman, holdings? DANIEL BOWMAN CEMETERY

Located in the northwest quadrant of intersection I-181 and Boones Creek Road, Johnson City, TN. Overgrown with vegetation and all the headstones knocked over. Four markers are embedded in trees. These graves were relocated in 2001 due to construction in the area to the Boones Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery across the road from 143 Bart Green Drive, Johnson City, TN.

In May of 1982, Irma Bowman Kitzmiller and Loraine Bennett Rae surveyed this cemetery and found near Solomon Hylton's marker:

Daniel Bowman who was born the 21st Nov. 1774, died the 5th Apil 1835, age 60y 7m 16d.

This marker was not found March 16, 2001. Daniel Bowman was one of the first preachers at the Knob Creek Church of the Brethren.

Bowman, George C., 1832-98, minister. G.C. Bowman was born in Washington Co., NT. He married Anna Hylton in 1860. He was a member of Annual Conference Standing Committee several times in the 1880s and 1890s. Bowman was remembered as an outstanding preacher and evangelist who drew on a remarkable fund of memorized Scripture in his sermons. BEH

ELIAS BOWMAN FAMILY CEMETERY

Located South of the Old Stage Road between State Hwy. 81 and Leesburg. It is under an oak tree at the edge of a field to the left and behind the Ruritan Club (old Leesburg Elementary School) building. GPS location: 36.17.55N 08.32.39W
This cemetery is in very poor condition and needs immediate attention before it is completely lost. Only one stone is standing. The rest are on the ground and the larger ones are broken.

BOWMAN-EPPERSON CEMETERY   Located off 933 East Mountain View Road in Johnson City TN, behind the office of Herman Jones, developer of adjacent Whittling Wood Subdivision. The cemetery can be easily reached from a new street, Falling Leaf Drive in the Whitteling Wood Subdivision. The lot measures approximately 70 ft. x 100 ft. There is a very large section of unmarked graves. GPS Location: 36.22.27N 082.22.44W

The cemetery had not been visible until September and November 1998 when Col. Epperson, Paul Alan May and John Hall cleaned away the heavy brush. They repaired and reset broken tombstones and intend to return with fill dirt in May 1999 to fill in the sunken graves.

Col. Epperson said he believes this cemetery to be a Bowman family cemetery as it was on the Bowman farm long before the Colonel's grandmother was buried there in 1899

There are at least seven sets of rough, unmarked rocks, and probably many more, where gravesites have been lost to time. Of the thirteen visible headstones, some face east and some west, facing each other.

There are initialed foot markers for the graves of Nancy K. Epperson, Violet E. Epperson. Effie G. Sellers, Annie Sellers,Willie Lelia Ford, John Bowman, Mahala Bowman. and Sarah Christy. The grave of Albert J. Epperson has a blank foot marker, and a large depression. The grave of Sanford C. Epperson has no foot marker and is slightly depressed. The tomb stones of Mahala Bowman, Joseph Bowman, Annie Sellers and Effie G. Sellers have previously been split in two.

As surveyed on April 20, 1999 by Ramona K. Vickers, with additional information from Col. Lewis M. Epperson, grandson of Albert Jasper and Nancy Catherine Nidiffer Epperson. Col. Epperson's address is 233 Hillcrest Circle, Spruce Pine NC 28777.

BOWMAN (JOHN) CEMETERY

The cemetery was located near the Boones Creek Baptist Church on Picken's Brigde Rd., Gray, TN; however, it was destroyed sometime in the 1940's.

Approximate GPS location: 36.23.55 082.24.25; Elevation: 1495 ft.

This was a community cemetery and other early settlers besides the Bowmans may be buried here.

From the Jonesboro Herald & Tribune, Jan 17, 1971: The first meeting of this Church was held in the Civil Gap school building on January 29, 1870. Mr. M. V. Nuffsinger acted as moderator and Mr. F. D. Sheffey was the clerk.
