SMALLMAN, Lucinda (1812 - 1884)
Death of Mrs. Lucinda Smallman
On Thursday, Sept. 25th, news reached us of the flight of that noble spirit, leaving the mortal remains and stilling the warm generous and kind heart which had pulsed so long, and engaged in so many acts of love and kindness to others. No one knew her but to love her, and the sad intelligence brought sorrow to all.
Mrs. Lucinda Smallman was born in Virginia, Nov. 25th, 1812, moved to Tennessee while a small child, and has lived in White, Van Buren counties for three score years and more. She joined the Baptist church about thirty-five years ago, where she lived an exemplary member until October, 1881, at which time she thought she saw her duty clearer, and connected herself with the Church of Christ, and had just commenced her happiest hours of life only to be soon blighted. She was stricken with paralysis, and was entirely helpless mentally and physically the remainder of her life. She was a woman of fine mental powers, with a happy and cheerful disposition, so rarely found; having the strongest sympathy for the afflicted and distressed she spent almost the whole of her time visiting, caring for and waiting on the sick for the last thirty years of her life. It can be truly said of "aunt Cinda" (as she was familiarly called by all) that she "visited the fatherless and the widow in their afflictions, and kept herself unspotted from the world."
She leaves one son, State Senator M.D. Smallman, together with a host of life-long friends in McMinnville, also in Warren county and those adjoining, where her name was as familiar as household words, who feel a profound sorrow in the loss of her as a true friend, a good, kind and loving mother, and especially will the afflicted realize they have lost a true and devoted friend and sympathizer. Farewell, "Aunt Cinda," my dear loved friend. We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but know if we live right we shall one day meet you "in the sweet bye and bye," whither you have gone to meet your reward in the bright beyond. SMITHSON, James Howard (circa 1931 - 1953)
McMinnville Mother, Two Others Killed In Collision; Nine Injured
A McMinnville mother and six children, the fiance of her daughter and a Woodbury Army veteran met death Friday evening as a result of a head-on collision of two auto- mobiles on Highway 55, near Summitville in Coffee county. The accident occurred at 10:15 p.m. as the two vehicles met at a sharp-breaking curve only a short distance west of the Coffee county community. The tragic crash claimed the lives of Mrs. Rebecca Morris Malone, 35, wife of Claude Malone, employee of Dews Lumber Company here; Elbert McCormick, 18, of Plainview community, and James Howard Smithson, 22, of near Woodbury. Injured in the collision were Mr. Malone, six children of the Malone family, Albert Jones, McMinnville, a passenger in the Malone car which was driven by McCormick, and Charles Smithson, 19, cousin of James Howard Smithson, who was in the car with the fatally-injured Cannon Countian.
The Smithson car was headed toward McMinnville when the wreck occurred while the Malone car was traveling in the direction of Manchester, State Highway Patrolman E.C. Erwin, of Manchester, said. Both cars were badly damaged in the crash. Two Manchester Funeral Home ambulances answered the emergency call to the wreck scene and while the injured were receiving emergency treatment at Farrar Clinic in Manchester, three ambulances from High Funeral Home here sped to the Coffee county seat to remove the injured to Medical Clinic here. McCormick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McCormick, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Manchester Clinic while Mrs. Malone, clinic attendants said, died shortly after being admitted. The Smithsons were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, Woodbury, following the accident and James Howard died there at 4:10 a.m. Charles, who received a compound fracture of the left leg in the accident, was transferred to Stewart Air Force Base hospital at Smyrna following emergency treatment at the Woodbury hospital. Mrs. Malone, McCormick and James Howard Smithson all received massive head injuries which caused their deaths. Admitted to Medical Clinic here were Mr. Malone, knee injury; Jones, fractured knee; Claudine Malone, cuts and bruises; Harold Malone, broken leg and broken arm; Wayne Malone, minor cuts and bruises, and Carl and Carson Malone, 7-year-old twins, face and body injuries.
James Harold Smithson, who died as a result of the crash injuries, suffered a broken jaw in a Cannon county accident about six weeks ago and had only been released from Thayer VA hospital, Nashville, on Tuesday before the Friday night wreck.
McCormick was engaged to Claudine Malone, 17, and was to be married to the young lady on Christmas day.
The hospitalized Malones, with the exception of 14-year-old Harold, were dismissed from the local clinic Sunday, while Jones remains in the hospital. It was reported yesterday that Charles Smithson remained confined to the air base hospital.
The Malone family reside on North Spring street, across from Mountain View cemetery. Mrs. Malone was employed at Molloy’s Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company prior to her death. Both Jones and the fatally-injured McCormick were residents of the rural area of the county.
James Harold Smithson was the son of Mrs. Emma L. Smithson and the late James C. Smithson of Cannon county. State Highway Patrolman Ervin and Patrolmen from the Winchester unit investigated the accident. Both the patrolmen and hospital attendants in Manchester described the collision as “the worst we’ve ever experienced.

SMOOT, BETHEL CAMPBELL (circa 1914 - 2000)
Medical pioneer dies at 86: Treatment came first, payment was secondary for Dr. Smoot
Prominent local physician Dr. Bethel Campbell (B.C.) Smoot, Sr. died Sunday at River Park Hospital, the facility he co-founded in 1972 with the late Dr. Thomas Frist and HCA group. He was 86 and had suffered from a lingering illness.
Dr. Smoot was a general practitioner and surgeon in Warren County and the surrounding area, practicing medicine from 1937 until his retirement in 1976. Early in his practice he was associated with the Medical Clinic and Hospital, which he later co-owned with Dr. C.M. Clark and continued to operate until it closed in the mid-70s to make way for the new River Park Hospital. A wing of the hospital was later named in his honor.
Dr. Smoot was known as a community doctor, often making house calls. He delivered an estimated 6,000 babies during his career. He was known in the community as the doctor who never kept records because he knew each of his patients by heart.
"Dr. Smoot had an enormous impact on the community," said Dr. Ray Troop, who began working with Dr. Smoot in 1970. "He came along when there wasn't a lot of doctors. Back then the main thing they had to offer was themselves and reassurance. Dr. Smoot was in practice several years before penicillin came along." Dr. Troop pointed out his colleague worked night and day and was always available to his patients. "At one time, I'd say about 50 percent of his work was home visits," Troop said. "He would make house calls and do home deliveries. He probably delivered about half the people in this town." Dr. Troop noted Dr. Smoot's wife, Jonnye Smoot, was instrumental in his practice, helping him coordinate what was normally a busy, around-the-clock schedule. Dr. Troop also cited Dr. Smoot's efforts in founding River Park Hospital here. "River Park changed the complexion of medical care here," Dr. Troop said.
G.B. Greene, who was a fellow member of Rotary and served on the River Park Board of Directors with Dr. Smoot, described the doctor as a "good, dependable person."
"He was an outstanding medical professional," Greene said. "I know a lot of patients who couldn't afford their bills, he wouldn't even send a bill. He had a front as a rough and tough person but inside he was really a generous and kind man."
Dr. Smoot was honored by his community for the designated Dr. Smoot Day enacted in Morrison in August 1967, and by the VFW as Citizen of the Year. He was honored by his fellow physicians at River Park Hospital when named Chief of Staff Emeritus.
Dr. Smoot was founder and former director of the Security Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was a member of Rotary Club International and a Shriner. He served on the Warren County Child Abuse Board and was a member of the Church of Christ. He served as a lieutenant with the CCC in Brunswick, Ga.
An avid angler, Dr. Smoot fished from Cuba to the Arctic Ocean.
He was married to the late Jonnye Walker Smoot who preceded him in death in 1996. He was the son of the late Bethel Merthon and Laura Elizabeth Edwards Smoot.
He is survived by son, Campbell Smoot Jr. and daughter, Kathleen Smoot-Kemezis, both of Tullahoma; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at High's Chapel with Paul Roberts and Laird Bryson officiating. Burial will follow at Morrison Cemetery.
